Re: What headers have you used?

The Hedman 69260's are made to fit this era of trucks so there really aren't any fitment issues. These headers are a bit less of a 'tuned' header than the ones for a later model truck such as the '73-'87's. The most common issue with using the later model headers is the clutch bellcrank or z-bar as some call it. If you are running an automatic this is a moot point. Using the later model headers with a manual trans often times requires modifying the bellcrank to clear the header tubes. Board member 64magoo used a set of Hookers on his truck that didn't require modifying. It's a close fit but it works...you can see his HERE

Re: What headers have you used?

I'm using the hooker headers too. I'm not sure if it's possible to install them without removing dipstick tube...but, a heads up to you; I snapped mine flush with the block on the original 283. This prompted me to pull the motor...and pulling the motor prompted installing a crate 350

it all turned out nice. I went to the hardware store and built an adjustable pedal-to-zbar linkage with a couple heim joints and threaded rod. Original linkage was worn severely. Overall, I shortened the effective length of this link by about 1"...the clearance is fairly tight, and shortening this link seemed to help.
...you can follow my journey through link in my sig

Re: What headers have you used?

I noticed a couple of BBC's. This thread might be useful for someone here. The framerail/engine clearances are the same (firewall is a bit off) from 60-66 to 67-72 for 2wd trucks. I ended up going with the Patriot Clipsters as can be seen on the 3rd page.

Re: What headers have you used?

Hey thanks for the response! I was thinking also of those hooker headers that were posted ,one of you said they had issues with the oil dipstick and plug wires, I have a new set of wires with the straight ends-I also was wondering if there were a big diffrence in performance between short vs long headers -or just using manifolds- there are some pretty cool tru-ram manifolds in the speedway catologe- what do you think? thanks

90degree boots seem to work best with the hookers, as they can be routed without contacting tubes. Shorties are generally more friendly to install and tuck up tailpipes (if truck is ultra slammed)...long tubes usually more performance minded, but honestly ...unless you're routinely tracking it in some headsup fashion...not to worry over. Either header style should be less restrictive than manifolds and offer more bang per buck; manifolds have a cool factor unto themselves though ymmv.

Dipstick tube was my downfall...the stuck bit in the block was essentially fused to it after 44+yrs; access to that area is pathetic while in vehicle... follow the link in my sig to "2008-0209 header fiasco" folder followed immediately by "2008-0216 engine pull" and look for the chewed nubbin stuck in the block

VTH,

That motor is sweet!

I just bought a set of ceramic Flowtechs. I have a 77 frame, so my set-up may not be helpful for yall.

Re: What headers have you used?

I used some flowtech's on my small block. They fit real well. Also I used corvette spark plug wires so they went behind and under the exaust so you could not see them.. HEI even..

Re: What headers have you used?

I have these Summit branded Flowtech headers. They fit pretty decently and they're ceramic coated for under $200. Summit wires too:

Re: What headers have you used?

I have a pair of those summit headers hanging in my garage. I have been thinking of putting them on E bay but if I use the engine they were for I would have to buy a new pair so I am up in the air about it..

Re: What headers have you used?

Hey anthony ,those ceramic headers you got from summit are they model # sum-G9006-9? those are the ones I found on the website. you say they fit well? I have a 63' and the guy at summit said they were for a 66' but these have the same frames so I don't see why it would be an issue.Have you had any problems with them? thanks

Re: What headers have you used?

That be the ones. They aren't hitting anything now that I put the right motor mount perches in. If you want to lay frame, these aren't the headers for you since they hang below the frame. Some people have good luck with Chevelle headers if this is a problem for you.

I haven't driven my truck on the road yet, so I can't comment yet on how well they hold up. The flanges could be thicker, but they aren't exactly thin either. This is with my temporary Thrush glass packs and you can see how they hang down at an angle instead of being parallel to the ground, but I figure an exhaust shop can fix this easily enough when I take it in. I don't have any support hangers on the mufflers yet and they are sagging. This makes it look even worse than it really is.

I bought the Summit branded ones. I don't know if the quality is any different than the true Flowtech brand headers.

Get some of those bolt on wire holder tabs so you can bolt them to the block to keep the wires away from the Headers.

Or... Get some Taylor SpiroPro cut-to-fit wires and make your own set... that way you know they will be right.
