3spd transmission "bullet" seals

Hey folks. I've got a 1968 3spd manual transmission that's leaking oil from the speedo cable. I've been told it's the seals on the bullet.

I've removed the bullet it has an oring and a funny seal on the end that is apparently missing. I've called every autopsies store around and done a thorough search online. Some info for th350/th400 etc Trans but no love for the manuals.

Like I said I'm in need of seals or a new bullet for a 3spd manual transmission. Also, what should I be inspecting on the plastick speedometer gear?

Thanks

Re: 3spd transmission "bullet" seals

I'm no expert. But, I am pretty sure the bullet used on the 3spd and the TH350 are the same, and probably use the same seals. It has been a while since I looked at fixing this leak, but, my memory is of only the o-ring.

Re: 3spd transmission "bullet" seals

I could never find a replacement for the seal but a new bullet is available w/seals from some specialty suppliers or probably a trans shop. I have a new one if you can't find one locally.

Re: 3spd transmission "bullet" seals

I just went through that on my th350. Found this on Ebay for less than $8 delivered.

I saw the o-rig and seal also on Ebay for the 3 speed.

Re: 3spd transmission "bullet" seals

Alright guys. The eBay seal kit came in today..

The original seemed to be a direct replacement. The seal on the other hand is too large (if it goes in the end of the bullet). When I took it apart there was no seal in the bullet just a gear and an o ring.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the small seal should press into the bullet correct?

Re: 3spd transmission "bullet" seals

Flip the bullet over. The seal presses into the threaded end not the pointy end. The yellow side of the seal goes outward when installed.

I'd bet money the bullet already has a seal in it if you flip it over and look. That guy on ebay includes an extra seal in the auction (some guys press the second seal in on top of the other seal for redundancy). I ordered one from the same place in the past.

Re: 3spd transmission "bullet" seals

This is the one I plan on replacing mine with in my 4 speed Saginaw. Should work in th350's and most Saginaws.

Not the different size opening where the seal goes.

I ended up getting this and it worked perfect. Just slipped right in and has extra seals that come with it.

Re: 3spd transmission "bullet" seals

There is a company in California, I think classic transmissions, that has the seals you seek. I am presently on vacation or I would look in the garage. I purchased seals for a 200-4R which are slightly larger than most and it worked perfectly.
