I don't know how you feel about step sides but I found this on Kijiji today, since your box is rusted out so much I thought you might wanna see it.

Well, I got most of the tranny painted....still waiting for the bits and bolts to dry more before installing them.

Yes, I copied twoodson on his color separation, but we live far enough apart I don't think it will matter much:-)

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

I also got the front shocks on. Tie rod ends too, but it is rubbing on the crossmember...any quick fixes? Do I have the pitman arm on at the correct angle?

My steering box is dead center turn-wise when the spindles are pointing straight ahead, but my cross arm is off at an angle if you can see from the pics...

Thanks!!

1. Yup, its a 2 car garage. It's barely big enough to work in length-wise, but its too cold outside to work out there for the next few months. My wife and I are parking outside and plugging the block heaters in at night.

2. The gold ones are grade 8 bolts, some of the silver ones are too, the rest I just refinished.

3. Nothing was powder coated, the frame was brushed: one coat Tremclad primer, two coats Tremclad gloss black. Tranny was sprayed, one coat Plasti-coat engine primer, three coats Plasti-coat engine paint (aluminum color).

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla" 1987 Chevy 2WD SWB

Now, I spent the day tearing down this motor and it took a while.

There is a LQ4 and LQ9 Service Manual that is floating around this forum that is good to refer to, but I'm going to show some of the steps here that I did as well that might help someone do this on their own as well.

If you screw up your motor it's not my fault, I'm just showing what I did & not telling anybody this is what they should do so "reader beware"!

Also, some of these steps will have associated pics, some won't --- so you need to figure it out.

1. I took off the rad hose to the water pump, there are 2 clips on the water pump to be removed, there is a small hose underneath as well & I took it off the nozzle behind the alternator.

Some of these hoses I just cut for speeding things up as I intend to replace them anyways.

2. I took the 3 screws off the top plastic cover.

3. I took off the nut on the front of the air intake that holds down the wire on the drivers side of the motor / intake.

8. Undid the nut on the ground wire on the drivers side bottom, near the front, which was the ground wire to the battery, there is also a small thin ground wire that bolts to the block behind this negative battery wire.

Very cool build. It's exactly the kind of project I'm hoping to start this weekend if I can get over to my friends shop.

Did your truck come with swaybars from the factory? I was thinking about ordering the Belltech swaybars when I order the other suspension parts but I was worried about needing extra hardware for a truck that didn't start off with them.

12. Undid the 10 mm lower front drivers side to let the black plastic clamp/holder for the wires under the front of the motor go....all the harnesses let loose at that point.

13. Popped off the belt.

14. Took off the alternator.

16. Pulled off both headers, there is a short 1/2 length bolt on rear position of drivers side. THIS IS NORMAL, I DIDN'T BREAK A BOLT!!!

17. Took off throttle body next, little hoses under it gave my some trouble getting them off so I just cut them and wull replace with new ones later.

(Here's some random pics of the valves --- color looks normal to me)

I bought new Belltech sway bars front and rear...mine just had a sway bar in the front before. The new ones will come with all the bolts etc etc you will need.

I'm going to watch a movie for a bit and finish this later.
