Yes, I've seen some 2wd trucks on this forum use it. The only thing that I have found. Is that with this crossmember either the pan or crossmember bar requires to modifications to fit. My oil pan hits the center bar. So I am going to be building a new center center bar.

You just can't beat them for the tq and SMILES per gallon!! I have some pretty radical SBC but you have to twist them up to get them to put out the power, and in a BBC the power is effortless and down low where you want/need it!! The only other vehicle I've driven that gives the same sensation is my 07 cummins, the tq just pushes you through the seat, so go turbo'd diesel or BBC!

You'll have to wait till next year. I'm taking this year off to build the motor and break it in. I also have a lot of prepping to do for the next mud bogging trip.

Re: 71 4x4 BBC Swap: Doing what I should have done the first time!

I know, I know. You are all ready for me to start putting it together. Well the good news is I received the last of the parts. So I am able to start assembling the engine. The bad news is that it will still be another two weeks before I will have time to start. I have a test I have to study for. Once I pass, then its on. I will have lots of pictures and current stats and info for you once I begin. Thanks you to all who are commenting and waiting patiently. Trust me the pile of parts on my garage floor is killing.

You don't have to build a new center bar, just get Kurt to send you two flanges and longer bolts. Put the flange in as a spacer and it should drop your center bar down

Re: 71 4x4 BBC Swap: Doing what I should have done the first time!

The only update is that I started putting the motor together this week. I'll post pictures soon. We ordered the wrong piston rings. Once I get the rings I should start making some real progress.

Re: 71 4x4 BBC Swap: Doing what I should have done the first time!

Finally have an update!

I found some time to work on the motor this week. I got the correct piston ring and was able to finish the short block. I am hoping to be able to fab the cross member for the tranny and the center link for the engine. I am also hoping that my buddy can finish port and polishing my heads next week. Once I have the heads, it should only take a weekend to finish this project. Enjoy, here are some pictures...

Re: 71 4x4 BBC Swap: Doing what I should have done the first time!

I hit a roadblock... The DIY4x cross member lowered the motor down quite a bit, causing the the headers to have serious clearance issues. I moved the engine forward 3 1/4" so the frame is narrower, but the tall valve covers clear the firewall. The exhaust ports on the heads are about an inch or two above the frame instead of 3-4". Any suggestions?

if it fits you should just leave it take the body lift off.

The valve covers fit because of the body lift and me moving the motor forward. Plus my tires shouldn't rub anymore with the 3" BL. This winter I will be doing some major overhaulin of the frame. I'm going to move the bumpers up, box the frame and new spring hangers to add 4" of lift. Total lift will be somewhere around 21".

Here is another shipment I received this week:

New Holley Street Avenger 870cfm Carb, Holley Blue Fuel Pump w/ regulator, & Dual fuel line

Flex-a-lite dual 13.5 electric fan kit

Flex-a-lite Tranny Cooler with Steel braided hose w/ fittings for cooler and fuel lines

Re: 71 4x4 BBC Swap: Doing what I should have done the first time!

Things have come to a halt over the last month. I am hoping with SEMA almost here that my buddy will be finishing his SEMA car soon. Then I'll be able to work with him, to finish the cross members. As for the motor, the heads are waiting to be polished and then the final machining. Once the heads are done, it will only be about a few hours to finish the motor. I was able to install the transmission cooler and get the lines ran today.

Re: 71 4x4 BBC Swap: Doing what I should have done the first time!

The DIY4X 67-72 crossmember is designed for a SBC. Yes, it bolts right in. So my issues are for a BBC. I talked with Kurt and he sent me another crossmember, but this one is just the pieces so that I can weld them together to fit the BBC.
