Looking for advice - wood bed 63 C20

I have all the lengths cut and all the widths cut. Now I need to figure out how to cut the edge profile. Anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking of using a straight router bit for the 3/16” groove.

Not sure about the edge cut though. Maybe another router bit for that too?

Like I said, first set was on radial arm saw (turned sideways) second was table saw. Need a dado blade for the second cut.

That wood looks rough, it looks like it needs a pass through the planer...

I do not have access to any of those. I do have a router and can easily cut the 3/16 groove. Just not sure what router bit to use to get that 1/8” cut off the edge.

These rabbeting router bits use a different size bearing to make a different cut?

EDIT: I’m doing everything from the rear bumper of the truck, so not a lot of options.

I think I’ll just get a 1/2” router bit and router the last edge, just a little less deep.

I actually just did some work on my bed. I removed all the old wood took and the bed off. Pressure washed the whole chassis, wire brushed and scraped off 60 years of gunk, and then painted it gloss black with rustoleum thinned for a sprayer. I rattle canned the diff cover with metallic hammertone (not pictured). I just dropped truck off yesterday for paint!

As a woodworker I have the tools to make my own bed wood but by the time I priced out some 4/4 S$S white oak it was close to $500. Hell even the rawer rough 5/4 was too much. To then take the time to do all of the additional work planing and routing didn't seem worth it to me. So I am just going to get the Oak wood kit from car and truck shop here in Charlotte and then varnish it myself....

Use a dado blade on a table saw. Lowes sells a decent set.

My dad and I used this small router table he had. Was definitely a 2 man job since we had to run the boards over the table, but it worked out pretty well. We used two router bits to make it work. First pass cut down to where the strips sit on, second pass cut the deeper groove

Yes, borrow a table saw from someone for this work. You can make multiple passes to get the part outside the slot knocked down if you don't want to buy a dado blade set.

Just to be clear, one of the boards (7-7/16”) will run into the wheel well, correct?

Good work! Yes, the outermost full board goes under the tub. You put the tub (wheel well) in place, reach in from the bottom, trace the inner edge of the tub on the wood with a marker, remove, cut with jigsaw. See my pics on post #25.

The stain color looks nice. I am going to be staining my bed wood soon. I am planning on staining all surfaces of the wood...top, bottom, sides, ends and the grooves...Would hate for moisture to expand the wood in an exposed area.

I was thinking about that, however, I still sealed it with polyurethane. Hoping that will hold up for a while. Not sure how long I will keep this truck. So, I don’t mind redoing it in a couple of years if I still have it.

Still have to cut the inside of the wheel wells. Trying to figure out an easy way to mark the boards. Probably just a grease pencil?

Can someone tell me which bolts go where? The bed to frame bolts are obvious, there's 10 of them.

I presume these all go through the rails, however, not sure where the large washers go.
3/8 x 1-1/4" long, with 14 washers.


These must be for the perimeter and around the wheel wells. I counted 36 holes - and, not sure where the eight washers go.
5/16 x 1-1/2" long, 40 each, with 8 washers.
