Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well to throw outta a few updates. My first fuel injection harnes sI built for this ole big block was too short in all the wrong areas so it has become the sacrificial lamb for a vortec 454 harness I just picked up for a franklin. Plans are to strip the covering off the 454 harness then go through and pull the pins out of the 454 computer connectors and restab em in the corresponding LS1 computer connectors lol time consuming but the length in the harness assemblies is way noticeable. Also wednesday having my son roll over to fed ex freight center and pick up my 1993 chevy truck nv4500 that is coming in from kentucky lol long story there. got it and the friehgt for 639$. If luck still holds I may be landing a ranger overdrive unit in a couple of weeks Also I have a check coming in late this week early next week will provide my truck rescue transport funds for first week of august. I will be flying down to fix the rear bearings in the axles and get him rolling enough to load on an enclosed trailer and bring him home already got the garage spaced cleared and ready plus plenty of space for all the parts boxes in the abck of the truck /sigh so dammed ready!!!!!

Sean

On a side note have picked up a couple of drive by wire chevy lq4/lq9 drive by wire harnesses I am working on stand alone converting as something to keep me from going stir crazy lol

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well been buys on my few days off got quite a few things done and waiting on a few things to come in lol. Firstly last week a nice guy from kentucky sold me a 92-95 chevy nv4500 2wd for 400$ add to that 225$ shipping through fedex freight I now have the transmission for my engine. Today while I was out n about I snagged up a complete ranger overdrive unit plus a few extras: muncie 465 with chelsea dable operated pto unit and a gmc aluminum bell housing that has a provision for a clutch pivot built into it. Plans are to try and track down the plate that hi impact has made for their ranger overdrives to adapt it to the nv4500 in my hands failing that will take the ranger apart and take the backing plate to a machinst to have a new one made that fits my transmission. still deciding on bell housings right now but honestly leaning towards the mechanical housing with the right springs ought to be reasonably easy on the knees for shifting lol.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

In addition to these lucky find bought up a used 454 vorte truck harness and started taking the split loom off and it is compoletely stripped and being repinned into the l18 vortec ecm connectors as we speak. Got an order of wire coming in tomorrow with some additional connectors to get the coil pack wiring and groun circuits in by the end of the week. 1st week of august a local boy is going to trailer the ole bugger up to me from oklahoma so I can start the final build stages with the exception of paint and body work..... more on that later lol here is some pics of the harness start to finish!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Here is a picture of the ecm bracket assembly parts numbers are: 10288066 and 10288067 I used partsvoice.com to find them got em out of california for about 40 bucks with shipping. If the gm part number is still good or an nos partsvoice great place to find some of the items you may be hunting for . It also interfaces with some of the NOS places in the country as well. The corvette ecm mount has 4 mnounting posts that are all even making it perfect for the 60-66 inner fender area. Will have more pics once I find a nice spot for it and the ecm and start mounting it. Thinking nylon bolts to prevent and ground arcing from the ecm would be a wise idea.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Hi guys n gals,
Ramjet 454 harness is complete just awaiting engine rebuild and truck in my hands to install and finish up the connections to it. Also I got some lucky strikes in on craigslist lol. 2 weeks ago I picked up a complete ranger overdrive unit bell housing and muncie sm465 transmission for 700$. Found out that advance adapters no longer makes the adapter plates for the nv4500 so hunting a machinist now to discuss redrilling versus new plate options for it. Looking at first week of august to get my truck shipped up from oklahoma YAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! will be flying down there to fix the axle bearings and get it ready to load on a trailer with my toolbox and other needed worldly car parts goods lol. Figger it will take me a days or two to get the axle straightened out and ready then will be repacking the bed and the cab with the parts and accessories I am having brought up with him.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

well gotta love murphy. Wifes min pin broke its leg so was forced to sell my 454 engine, nv4500, and the ranger overdrive unit that I had bought for it. only thing I held back were the vortec 454 coil pack valve covers lol will be throwing those up for sale here soon. But at the same time I lucked out have to semi kinda go back a few steps but will work out still planning to do the Allison 6 speed trans in the process of saving money to get one from a junkyard atm. Also started working on a new console project and idea after looking at some newer gmc vehicles. Got my hands on a console with floor shift assembly and the tap shift button. Also my baby is home from Oklahoma alil worse for wear have to do some filing on the rear passenger side dana 6 spindle when the bearings seized it left a ridge that needs to be smoothed out on it grrrrr nothing is ever easy /sigh.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

so onwards upwards and beyond lol here are some pics of the console and mods to get it to fit in the truck still working on it as we speak so there will be more to come such as the shifter cables and filler panels etc. Also got my wiring harness out after looking at the Frankenstein mess I had made of the thing and started all over from scratch on it. If any yall need txl wire in relatively short lengths there is a place in Vancouver Washington called motor sports wiring his prices are very very good 16 gauge wire 25 foot length about 5 bucks he does not carry any striped versions tho I keep mentioning it to him lol . well here we go some pics of the new console experiment.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

some pics of the start of the wiring harness rebuilding. Just got the fuse box torn down last night and saved what I could salvage from the old harness. I also relocated the old air relay to the fuse block next to the horn relay trying to make it a cleaner installation. Still have left to figure out where to mount my headlight dimmer relay some where near or on the fuse block itself.
I need to call old air wiring tomorrow and get another copy of there wiring directions for the unit mine got damaged sitting in the barn for the last two years grrr!

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

The 454 got sold about a month ago well fortune decided to smile upon me lol. I started a small ls engine rewiring service out here and have been getting a lil of everything as fas as wiring jobs go currently working on a older tpi unit for a friend. Well one customer didn't have cash to pay me so instead he offered a 2004 escalade lq9 in trade for my work. so now I gotta gather the stuff back up for an ls swap now thank god it aint hard lol. Plans changed on the transmission not going to do the manual trans after all sed the hell with it and looking at an Allison 6 speed at this time since I now have a shifter and console designed to work with it lol. Will be getting that ordered next month I am hoping. This weekend I picked up another 4.3 ac bracket with bypass pulley for 25 bucks at a junkyard.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Been a busy critter last few days getting the harness rebuilt and ready to install in the truck. have a few things left to finish up in it but turning out very nicely. I am relocating the dimmer switch to a relay unit on the fusebox and setting up a dash switch in the dashboard for the dimmer circuit as we speak waiting on a few parts to come in for it. Also got the malfunction indicator lamp set up in the harness as well. keep installing and removing the harness as each section of connectors are completed to look at the next set along the line. Thinking on the old air harness doing a SC button like on the newer vehicles and try and turn it into a blend system instead of how they have it rigged up. More to come on that one lol .

here are a few pictures of the harness rebuild and mod.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

the final steps in rewiring and reworking the harness is to do something completely new for a firewall junction that does not involve that nasty icky sticky connection grease lol. Going through the local salvage yards has yielded a few nice lil parts here and there and some fantastic ideas for fuel injection fuse box assemblies. here is the old firewall connector and its replacement part I found in a early 2000's oldsmobile car in the engine compartment. with a little digging was able to secure a pass through mount for it from an electronics supply company .

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

and last but not least started tearing down the terrain console to get the wiring out for modification and prep for the tap shift and lights hook up along with a few other things in it as well . I got rid of that nuisancy shift lock assembly from the shifter as I found they can only handle 0.5v on the micro switch so I did away with that pia lol . Going to be working on the tap shift button and see ifs its current out put matches that of the 2006 shifter assembly out of the trucks. since my truck is a high hump I wasn't able to make the front pocket assembly work so I am working on a filler panel and ac vent mount spot where the console will meet the dash still more work to be done on it.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

been busy last couple weeks making parts lists gathering things up lol and working on the wiring harness. Got the resistor values for the 2006 truck tap shift assembly and I am now waiting on the needed resistors to come in. One of them is a ruddy bugger to get so being patient and waiting for some test samples to come in from some resistor companies it sucks I have to wait 7 weeks. Local circuit board company is going to swap out the resistor in the terrain shifter handle. luckily the 06 trucks and 11 terrain use the same circuit wiring for the tap shift setups. got a little more done on the wiring harness the dimmer relay is in place now and I am in the search for a dash lighted led button for the dimmer switch to replace my cigarette lighter in the dash. all of the wiring circuits are in place just have to gather the lil odds n ends for them to start getting it ready to finalize and install it. Firewall connector/bulkhead is almost finished. I just have to lay in some aluminum plate for it and mill it out to the right opening size. Last but not least WOOOOHOOOOOO its here on a pallet 2006 Allison 6 speed from a big block truck hehehe will be playing with that once the engine is out of the machine shop with its stroker kit and ls1 hot cam setup. looks like the trans will clear the body but will post pics when I get to that point in the installation.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

welp got my engine covers in yesterday too sweet brand new through gm parts direct 115$ also Friday will have my cruise control switches and the remainder of my interior harness connectors in hand to start wiring them in. going to be putting the harness up in the cab and routing the wires for there final cut off and wire in. nother week or two will be ready to tackle the under hood and body wiring on the outside of the truck. then start saving my pennies for the engine parts. hunting for a set of the emblems in the second picture if one of yall know where a set is reasonably priced not like the dudes on fleabay that think they are made of gold. I want another set for my engine covers like I did with the L92 engine I had previously

Capnfab,
lol I started a ls engine rewiring business on the side recently. I have built and rebuilt this harness so many times it is where I am asleep and able to do it. Going to posting up some pics next week of the cruise and dimmer relay switch assemblies .

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Well got a few more things done in the wiring of the interior of the truck. I finally got all the switches in for the dimmer and cruise control circuits and go them ready to install. still have to drill a couple of holes in the dash for the cruise control switch assemblies but it is going to turn out nice looking.

Here are some pictures of the switches I found they are gonna be cool when installed.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

And on to other things did some talking with several ls performance shops about the 6.0 engine before I started dumping money into it. Come to find out it was not going to work for the Allison without a large chunk of money for a turbo or supercharger 11:1 compression etc so I sold it off at a slight profit and got something with both factory capability and enormous build potential after doing some reading on a nice build thread on performance trucks forums hehehehe. Enter the vortec 8100 496 cubes picked up one cheap at a local salvage yard. The heads are in the shop right now since GM thought 8 mm exhaust studs would be quite fine in the head NOT!!!! 3 of the broke flush in the block lol. So they are getting repaired as we speak. Going to go back with a set of arp head studs and get it all back together next week. Got the short block and Allison in the truck and it fits decently had to pull the engine forward on to the 6 cylinder mounts on the frame and may have to do alil radiator relocation but will know more when its assembled and in completely and the nose is back on. I am going to have a friend section the trans cross member a slight bit to get the Allison mounted in the rear which will give me 1/2" clearance on the floor pan. the bell housing on the Allison wasn't going to clear the floor hence the 6 cylinder mounting spot. and it cleared just find from that point back. Also the truck blocks have both traditional and the duramax style engine mounting bolt holes to work with

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

That's interesting. I did not know that the 8.1 had provisions for the earlier engine mounts.

I don't mean to pee in your Wheaties, but I would not use that style engine mount with that engine. I doubt those will stay together long with the torque output of that engine. If those engine mounts come apart, and they will, the engine will be free to jump around. I much prefer the '73 and up engine mounts. They are a much stronger design, and will not allow the engine to move very far. To install the '73 + mounts, all you need are the frame brackets from a '73-'87 C20 or C30. Then the 'clamshell' that bolts to the engine , the thru bolts and the engine mount itself.

I bought some of those same lighted pushbutton switches on ebay a while back, for future uses.

Re: 1964 GMC 3/4 ton build :D

Hey Captnfab,
Yeah I am looking at that myself. I am also looking at the 67-72 big block mounts as well. I already trimmed my frame in the past for the 73-87 mounts so I can drop them in right in ifn needs be. Once I get the heads back on the engine I will know for sure which way to go the heads are a slight bit taller than the older bbc heads and it is a tall deck engine to boot. The rear mount of the head is pretty close to the firewall as it sits now. Yeah those switches are sweet looking wiring them into my dash light circuit so when I flip on the dash lights they will light up at night. I got the resistors in for the tap switch circuit will be getting those done next week. I am going to have to modify the factory cross member a small amount to get the th400 mount on the Allison to work it needs to drop about 3/8 of an inch for it to clear the cross member and the body. Friend of mine in Lynwood is pretty good at it so I am having him do the cut and welding on it then back to the powder coaters for its final coating. then on to getting the axle swapped over to the new housing and be pretty close to firing this thing off and maybe putter around the neighbor hood lol .
