Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

I'm blown away by your frame and fab skills, great job. I bought a blazer tank last week and I'm getting ready to install it. Where did you get your tank straps from?

Great build. What paint did you use to do the frame? Brush, spray, undercoat? Also, how wide is the rear end, mounting surface to mounting surface?

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

Thank You for all the comments

sgtusmc: We did not buy them we made them out of some scrap stainless and bent them around some 3/8 rod for mounting points. It does not move at all the way we have it mounted.

hotrod1: We used Rustoleum brush on semi gloss primer we did 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of red and got it as thick as we could. Do you want to know from the mounting point to the frame or the wheels?

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

I'm digging the straps. Are you going to put a cushion between the strap and tank, to keep the squeeking down? I like the way you are painting as you go. I bought a gallon of red Rustoleum to paint my garage doors some time ago. I've been painting/brushing the frame in areas I've worked on. Someday I hope to have a completly red frame...lol
Good luck on your build. Looks outstanding so far!

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

yes that is what we are doing with the painting get a section done paint it up. We where going to put some pieces of rubber in there but when we try to move it we shake the whole truck and it doesnt make any noise at all. Once we get it on the road and notice some squeeking we might put something in there.

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

Nice job, I,m building a 54 with a 89 front c4 (going to start a thread soon.) I'm using a Progressive Automotive cross-member, I've got it all tacted in ready to mount the upper shock mounts. My question is what Alden shock are you using? I have the 657 with a 650 spring rate (spring is about 9 inch long) and it seems to be a bit too long. I'll be posting pics soon.

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

We have the 657 also and a 450 spring rate and it is 10 inches I believe. And it is a tight fit to get them in there but they fit.

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

Thanks for the info, I would also like to ask what are you using for a lower shock mount. I have the one's Progressive sent with the cross member but I'm not liking the location. Can't seem to get the right angal, too far end. Was thinking of going with the Aldan corvette lower mounts. Once again you guys are doing an awesome job.

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

Well we made our own bottom mount that also connects the sway bar and we had our shocks modified with universal connections so the mounts swivel like a heim joint. you may want to check out flat out engineering the also make a bottom mount.

Awesome looking build! What are your plans for paint? Also, will you be using the transverse leaf on the rear?

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

You guys are kicking ASS on this build. I wish I had the time and motivation (and Money) to whip one out that fast. Working by myself, I find myself slowing down and needing a kick in the butt to get back on track. I actually had to move my cab from the back yard to the garage all by myself. Good thing I have a strong back and a weak mind. But that's the way I have done my whole project, putting the dog house on and removing it, the bed, the cab, etc. Thank god for a cherry picker and good old American ingenuity.

Great workmanship and ingenuity. Thanks for sharing it with everybody.

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

Bartman it sure seems slow and we have gotten very lucky on the financial side of things from here on is where all the money is going to go. There sure is a long list of things we need to consider it driveable. This is not going to be a show truck to start we want to drive it and fix it up as we acheive the funds. But we did just get a steering column and the linkage this past week and just finished it up just need to get a picture.

Re: 1952 chevy home made frame build

My Grandfather has caught the truck bug and found a 1959 Chevy Big Window Fleetside with a 305 and 350 trans. We have not found any rust on it and it supposedly runs but it has a bad starter we are told and the guy gave him a new one and a bunch of extra parts to go with it. All in all it is very straight.
