Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Not a ton to report after this weekend. During the week I went to the salvage yard and picked up a rear wiring harness. Got the taillight buckets, rear bumper brackets and front running light lenses with the stainless trim. Also got a wiper fluid tank all for $25. Saturday drove up to Classic Parts with a friend and got some new taillight lenses and clear sidemarkers and a few odds n ends. My buddy got front end parts for his 75. Also they gave us a couple free shirts. Got bumper brackets cleaned up, painted and installed with new grade 8 bolts. Bumper on too. On our way back we stopped at Oklahoma Joes for some bbq...it was pretty tasty.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

My next project is to decide on what to do to my motor this winter. Either pull it out, clean it up, replace gaskets, paint, put back in. Or I can rebuild this motor into a 406. One thing is for sure, I will be pulling the motor soon.

I just checked our your whole thread, you have a nice build going on, nice to swap the diff's up at least it will be more useable, body work is no fun but you have it coming together really nice. Won't be long and you will be driving it.
Rick/Mudman. Keeping my eye on your build now.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Last weekend got the bumper put on, here it is! Also in this picture you can see that I got my tail light buckets put in and an old lense on the one side.

Also decided to pull the seat this weekend and finish cleaning up the floor of the cab. Nothing really wrong with it, just gave it a quick sanding to give it some tooth. Pulled the hump so I could clean off all crappy silicone that the PO and smeared everywhere.

The hump had a bunch of filler in the groove, obviously to seal it when installed. I picked it all out and wire wheeled all around the mating surface and the top.

I then used some spray can bed liner to hit all the nook and crannies of the floor. Then I used rustoleum roll on bedliner from a 5 gallon can to put a nice thick coat on. Looks pretty good!

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Got a little work done on the truck(s) today. First got my 07 sb on the lift to put on a 2.5" leveling lift kit. Strut spacers in the front and then replace rear blocks with taller ones. Pretty easy job on the lift.

On the lift.....best tool ever!

And after the lift. Not a huge difference, but I like it. Sits level now. I noticed the difference when I first got in it to pull out of the shop.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Also worked on my 84 K5. Put a new heater core in, pretty easy job. Also just about completed a power steering conversion on my dads 66. Got all the brackets from CaptainFab. Really nice stuff, really good instructions. Thats it for now, doubt the weather will be nice enough to work on any of it anytime soon. Picture below is what typically takes up all the space in the shop.

Definitely coming together!! What are kind of lift do you have for the truck? Thinking about doing a shackle flip in mine and cross over steering.

On the 76 its spring in the front and blocks in the rear. Front has drop sway bar brackets and a raised steering arm all from Superlift. Would like to make it an all spring lift and get new for the rears, just havent done it yet.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Have been getting lots of work done, but not updating here, figured it was time so I wouldnt forget what I had done. First thing I did this spring was decide to pull the motor and re-gasket everything. No rebuild, just get it to stop leaking. Thing was filthy!

Good a good bit of work, but got it all broke down, cleaned up, all the components cleaned and everything painted, new gaskets, and reassembled.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Probably would have should have could have gotten a lot more work done but instead my dad bought this. A 1959 Shasta Aeroflyte 16' camper. Spent a couple weekends cleaning it out, doing some minor repairs and searching for parts. No awesome update pics of it.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

All the rest of the work that I have done has been in getting the motor wired up again, plumbed and ready to fire. I have to find a replacement radiator, mine is too tall. Got the whole front end reassembled and buttoned up, hood bolted on for the first time and opening and closing with ease. I then went and made my largest purchase to date on the truck. 37 x 12.50 x 16.5 BFG Baja military hummer tires. Bought from Trailworthy Fab in wichita. All 4 tires were 15-16/32 in tread, all in very nice shape. Took them to the shop and had them mounted on a set of 7in wide stock steel wheels, guy said they mounted up very easy. I am very happy with how they look on the truck. Stuck my hubcaps on them and they look awesome!

ANDS THEN IT HAPPENED!!!! My truck is at my parents place because I dont have space for it at my house. So when my dad decided to mow, he decided to get close to where my truck was in the grass. Problem is the "roll" bar on the mower was laid down and sticks out a bit. Well he drug it down the side of the passenger bed side and put a couple nice creases in it. I suppose thats just rent for me leaving it as his place for two years. It happens and I will find a new bed side for it sometime.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Slow and steady wins the race......got some more work done on the truck. Got all the wiring and plumbing done on the motor. Took some adjusting and timing but got the truck running like a top. Filled up the tranny and took it for a spin, problem is no brakes again. The fronts give me a nice hard pedal then I move to rear and it all goes away. Am thinking I have bad cylinders in the rear drums. That will need fixing. Also finished up the wiring on the clearance lights, so now they come on. Next job is to get the exhaust finished up, have a set of Flowmaster series 50 mufflers to go on.

Could be master cylinder also, but chances are your right on the rear slave cylinders, nice to get some more done, all takes time.

Re: 1976 3/4ton 4x4 Shortbed

Been almost 2 months since my last update. Exhaust in on and welded up. Am going to add a couple mufflers here in a couple weeks. Started on the rear brakes. The adjuster was stuck so getting the drums off was a chore, but one that got completed. Had to get them both turned, but they are on now with new cylinders and now I have a full pedal. While having the motor running I noticed I wasnt getting a reading on the temp gauge. Another easy wiring fix. Here in the coming weeks I am going to clean the bed out, get it all bolted down tight and start using the thing as a truck! Will try to shoot it all one color at some point.
