1970 CST K20 4x4 Project

Well, I bought this truck and have been beating my head trying to figure out why I could not get it in timing. Turns out I have a flat spot on the cam. So Next week I will be pulling the cam and replacing it with a Melling MTC-1 Performance Cam. I am alsoreplacing the intake with a Edelbrock performer, carb, headers, and new exhaust. I am taking the Glass packs off, I hate the sound.

Today I replaced the "custom" steering wheel with a NOS wheel and fixed the horn. My plan is to restore the truck to as close as to stock as possible. First I want to get the engine running right so it will be a good tow rig for my boat.

I will post some pics as I go along. The following pics were taken before i changed the carb and steering wheel. Wish me luck

Monday the camshaft replacement starts. I can't wait to hear and feel how much better the truck runs with it installed.

Re: 1970 CST K20 4x4 Project

Started the cam swap, header install, intake and timing chain exchange. Here are some pics with my new Steering wheel vs the other one that was on when I got the truck. also here is a pic of the wheels I will be putting on the truck. I also got a magnetic oil drain plug just in case there are some little flakes floating around. The pics of the engine are of my new Carb installed, but it will be soon be sitting on a new intake manifold.

Sounds like a lifter ticking in there as well. Do you have plans to mess with the valve train at all?

@sandking

Yes, The lifter that contacted the worn cam lobe was con-caved. It was royally messed up. I replaced all the lifters. I will post a pic of the worn cam and lifter. The engine is almost back together, just fitting the headers, pullys, and little other things back on.

updated pic ofbad cam and lifter

Here ya go. The lobe was worn off more than I expected, it is nonexistent. My finger is pointing to where the lobe should be.

Thanks, Yeah, it is pretty much all there. Some mods I am doing to the engine are for more power for towing. The back bumper is a trip. There is an up hitch welded to it that goes through to the frame. The past owner used the truck as a 5th wheel tow rig so did some mods to make that possible. Hopefully tomorrow I will be done with the engine work and can get the new exhaust mounted. I hope I don't get pulled over on the way to the muffler shop for driving with just headers.

What are the stories you heard about the glass fuel filters? Do they break and catch fire?

Re: 1970 CST K20 4x4 Project

the main issues I know of the filter coming unseated turning it into nothing more then a sight glass. the other thing I've heard is them breaking, causing a fire. Which makes sense considering rubber flexes, metal bends, but glass shatters...

Re: 1970 CST K20 4x4 Project

glass getting hot, vibrating and breaking... right over your exhaust, not fun then.... some guys even avoid the rubber gas line... I'm going with the braided stainless covering the rubber...

Re: 1970 CST K20 4x4 Project

Done with the Cam replacement. I ended up also putting on a new water pump. I didn't put a new exhaust system due to lack of funds, but I will get it later. The headers look and work great. The truck is running so much better.

install of new back window

I ordered a new back window from LMC. The old window would not open and the glass was broken out from one of the sliders. I took my truck to a Auto Glass place and asked them if they would put in the new rear window for me. The guy was all up tight about doing it since the truck was so old. He said that the chrome strip and seal was a ***** to work on and didn't want to risk bending it up. I told him that was the reason I went to him because he is supposed to be a professional. Anyway, I went home and after watching a youtube video, I installed it myself with no damage. It really flusters me when I take an old car to a professional and they are scared to work on them. I would think they would love to work on something that doesn't require a computer or a special set of wrenches.

Below are some before and after pics.

Re: 1970 CST K20 4x4 Project

Just wanted to post this because someone referred to my truck as a Cheyenne Super. As far as my understanding goes, CST stands for Custom Sport Truck. I don't see any markings that say "Cheyenne Super" on this truck.

This is a nice project! I've thought about doing a 70's 4x4 in the future. Keep it up!

Nice project! Are those the stainless ebay headers? How much room is there between the driver side collector and pto cover on your sm465?

Re: 1970 CST K20 4x4 Project

Any updates? Curious how its running and if you've done anything else to it. Also what type of mileage you get with gearvendors and how you like that setup? Whats it like with a manual trans?

Nice truck.
