C-10's at Barret Jackson

I was watching the BJ auction on Sunday when a blue and white 69 C-10 came across the block. It had a 71-72 grille, hood and front bumper, a 88-91 bench seat. It sold for 32K! The guy who talks about the features when they are auctioned didn't mention anything about the changes. I'm thinking he is not a C-10 expert! He did mention that 67-72 trucks are becoming more popular and trucks that look mostly stock bring the best money.
I agree that most people care more about the finished product than the originality of a pickup. I'm not saying that a documented highly optioned original truck isn't worth more that a similiar equiped pieced together one, rather that a base truck that is original and documented may not bring the same money as well put together fully optioned one that didnt come from the factory that way.

a lot of Sunday cars were getting stolen (cheap). That C10 did go for a good price and they never mentioned anything about the 'upgrades'. I think they were just tired and waiting to get out of there as the Saturday trucks were better described.

I watched the Orange and White 70 CST BB go for $40K. I've not seen any others but I've recorded most of the sessions.

Last night there was a hugger-ish looking what they reported to be 72 that was clearly dressed in 67 sheet metal (no marker lights early style front clip) and they never mentioned any of the changes at all. I like and respect mike joy a bunch but the other guy on the block with him was getting on my nerves. I guess it's a lot to ask for people to know every little detail of every car ever made but as an american I find it annoying that they know the jags, Mercedes etc. better than there own American steel. Haha okay end of rant!

Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale pulls more money than say Palm Beach...some of those same trucks would be lucky to get half that price elsewhere! It's a big risk...I wanted to take my 66 crew to Palm Beach 'cause they permitted a reserve years back when Scottsdale didn't. I wanted to have it shown on primetime like Friday or Sat.nite It was going to cost me $6k to send it down and back if it didn't sell ! So I am not a gambling man so I bailed on that deal. It was entertaining don't get me wrong but there's something that I am just not real confident at those auctions. A guy in town took a couple of hemis out and had a few friends scattered around the bidding area to bump his price up...it cost him $60k to bring his 2 cars home! Serves him right...It's not a even...some vehicles took 3 minutes and others took what seemed to be 20 minutes?

Here is that 69 (with incorrect grill) I think it ended up selling for $32,000. The only reason I took this photo is because it's the color scheme I'm going with on my 72 K10, so I wanted to show my wife what my truck will be smiler to when I finish (in about 10 years)

Thats the one! Now that I see it again I'm pretty sure those mirrors are correct for 71-72 only? The selling price of that truck just reinforces that people care more about the finished look/product than originality.

The selling price at the BJ auction doesn't really enforce real world pricing though. There's are 100's, maybe even 1000's of redone C10s nicely, most custom or more original that don't even sell for that on a day to day basis. The price and lack of originality and replacement of body parts on various years where they don't belong could also be because the buyer doesn't realize it's a puzzle put together to look good and bring in more than it's actually worth. A lot of people don't know the exact years and what came on which model, let alone which hood, grille, fenders came on the '67 vs the '72. And to hamper the fact is non of that stuff is mentioned during the auction either, so it's always buyer beware.

This one below sold for $31,900. I know one similar that's been for sale for a year now at $15,000 and I know another that is around $11,000 in similar condition. Both of those have the new box on them also. I would never pay that much for a truck like that, but it brought in that much due it being in the auction. I stopped going to auctions as the prices have got out of hand and people and just trying to outbid each other without even caring what the final price is lol

This one was only $10g more than the one above but blows it out of the water in ever aspect. Yes I know the one above is 2009 and this below is 2013, but the market wasn't even that big in 2009 compared to now and look at that price lol

I'm a total waste for even barging in here by saying "I'm building a 69" with zero pictures AND this is my first post ever BUT...is using certain features from other year trucks on the year you own really frowned upon?! I have a 69 but went with 5 lugs axles/hubs, 71-72 mirrors, and added stainless trim to the windshield and rear window. They all "look" factory and were done with genuine GM stuff as much as possible. I love the design and look of these trucks so much but liked certain things from certain years/trims so I put together some, what I thought, tasteful options. I mean I've seen hundreds of 67-68 front clips on 69-72 trucks and I think it's great. I think that 69 at auction, with 71-72 grille/bumper, looks great! My truck is a factory SWB fleet with a 350/3 ott. I bought the 290hp 350 to keep the older valve cover bolt locations and put a 700R4 for better drivability. Am I "that guy"? I would think the wild c notch/bag/shaved everything crowd would get more heat. I think all the ways we do these trucks up is a positive thing. They are truly the most beautiful trucks ever built and there are some great minds out there exploiting that.

I have always felt that BJ auctions and others are a legitimate part of the marketplace. While the prices may seem inflated any one of us could roll the dice and put our vehicles in the auction if we wanted. If there was a glut of nicely restored and modded vehicles crossing the auction block do you think the prices would still remain high in this venue? I don't think so. I have a truck I know would probably do well at the right auction but still haven't gotten up the guts to enter it in one!

Welcome to the board. Nothing wrong at all with what you are doing, it's all OEM GM stuff and looks good. nobody I know frowns on engine mods and upgrades either.

Excellent first post. I'm kinda in the same boat, 1968 truck. Shaved 68 clip and bed, 72 cab, 69 doors, late model gm buckets, gm rallys, and an ls. Still all gm but with what I like from alot of different years. And again excellent first post, some are purists, some aren't, like us, and go with what fit our wants and needs and those didn't come factory.

I'm that guy too. I want the best of both worlds, the looks of the C10 with the comfort, convenience, fuel economy, & handling of a much newer truck.

I've gone the "Factory Original" route with my 69 camaro. It's not 100% original but pretty close. It also drives and handles like a 45 year old car. I love it and will probably pass it down to my kids. But it's really not much fun to drive other than around town. I would so love to restomod this car, but because only about 300 were made, I'd be crazy to do it. (Z/10). So, I took a different round with my 72 GMC. I want it to look stock, but not behave stock.

GM made literally hundreds of thousands of these trucks, they will never be rare. Desirable yes.

Thanks everyone. This site has been a huge inspiration and resource for me. I'll stop lurking so much and actually post! Shooting for a May/June completion if I can ever get some solid chunks of time in on her. Once I corral all the photos, I'll do a build thread...hopefully before it's all finished.

While I agree I also believe you should look at things with an eye towards re-sale value and ease of selling. Choose a color which you like and also is palatable to a large group of people. More often than not I've seen obnoxious color schemes result in difficult to sell vehicles. Re-painting can be a difficult proposition--and very expensive. Heavily modded vehicles will be slow to re-sell also. As I said on another board I restore with an eye towards re-sale with a nod towards my personal tastes. Generally folks don't want to buy someone else's dream unless it's tasteful--or cheap......

I agree with your thoughts. Case in point my pink and white 1972 Custom DeLuxe I sold last August. I bought it in August 2001 because I really liked the pink and white colour and over the years got razzed quite a bit about the pink and was asked numerous times "Is it your wifes truck?". I realize it not everyones colour choice but I bought it the way it was because I liked it and did until the day it sold. I also sold it for 5000.00 more than I paid in 2001.

I think I can talk on this thread because I have dealt with Barrett Jackson First hand. I sold my custom 67 chevy c10 called second chance there in 2011. It was the biggest mistake I have ever made when it comes to cars. I paid for prime time spot at 1800 dollars. I was promised internet bidders. It was Saturday night and I was supposed to roll across the block at 8 pm I did not go across the block till 10:45 at night. Most of the bidders had gone home and the internet was closed. My truck stalled at 25000 and they really did not have a lot to say about the truck because they asked me earlier in the week to shorten my description of the truck. Long story short The guy is up there fumbling around because my description was to short at there request and they dropped the hammer at 42000. I lost my a$$. I would tell you to stay as far away from these thieves as possible. Mecum is the way to go in my eyes. You can not base value of a car or truck of BJ
