Re: Wreckers are so AWESOME.

Even with an incorrect lame old 307 engine you still got a great truck for the money. Nice score.

I'm not sure it's incorrect. I did see another one with a 307 4 SPD in it, and it was factory.

Re: Wreckers are so AWESOME.

Hi no moa great wrecker its always great seeing them trucks still being used and whats the 39 that in part of your Vin number mean , and that guy MARKDTN of post # 50, that said this: A Holmes 440 and a 500 are completely different animals. A 440 is a 1-ton style unit, a 500 is for a bigger truck and is much heavier duty. he is wrong, there is in FL a 1970 one ton chevy wrecker with the 480 wrecker boom body and in SC is a white on blue 1967 chevy one ton wrecker with the 500 wrecker boom its red and i got the pictures some where to back this up also in fall branch TN a guy with a green 1963 chevy one ton wrecker has the 500 wrecker boom its white , and dose your wrecker have the over load springs in the rear that five leaf springs i think

Thanks,
The 500's were for 1.5 ton and up, but I to have seen them on 1tons. Mine has the standard leafs, then a set of overloads of 5.

Re: Wreckers are so AWESOME.

As far as insurance goes. I just have liability on mine. Told them its a c30 chevy truck. Hagerty wont touch it. Wont do commercial vehicles.

I turn people down all the time asking for a tow. I started by telling them I dont have insurance to tow, but they seemed to take it personally and said they`ll sign a waver and such. So now I tell them its a sling back and will hurt your car. And that puts an end to the conversation.

Mine is a backup more then anything. Other than towing/lifting things the bed isnt very useful. I worked the **** out of my s10 last year redoing the house, couldnt use the towtruck for any of it.

I`ve been toying with the idea of removing the rigging and making the bed more pickup like. Just havent come up with an idea to make it look good yet.

I love my towtruck. A local body shop bought it new in 72 and kept it local and pushing things around. It only has 19,000miles on it when I bought it. Needed a clutch, driverside window and ditching the 3 piece rims. Got it for $500. still had the orig points, wires and exhaust, brakes....ect ect. The ujoints just gave out. solid no grease fittings. And yes they are original too....lol

Oh and did I mention its in the new Audi commercial?.....I might have said that a few times on here....LOL

I think you mean the name is Goodman. I keep wondering if there really was a dealership named Good Man

Does yours have a tow hitch? I've used mine with a trailer...even hauled cars that way. It's as good as a rollback, only the load sits lower, which is nice. Here in Maryland they won't issue historic tags to tow trucks,I noticed, So,no point in getting historic insurance. Mine needs a full inspection anyway and I can get regular liability for cheap

It's on the bulletin board full of pictures of his past hauls. He posted a thread about his tow truck is a star here so you can watch it and stop in (You Tube)

Thumbs up Re : Wreckers are so AWESOME.

I AM sorry but , at the time I could only have one truck and it needed to be able to haul things , that lets out a Wrecker .

It was an old , beat to crap 3600 Chevrolet (naturally) with a 235 , Muncie SM420 tranny and a PTO that reversed to raise or lower the hook , this meant two levers sticking up out of the back of the bed , one clutch and the other the PTO Gears , I doubt OSHA would allow it these days , it was SO crude , it has a " Murphy Plate " instead of slings ~ care was needed or it'd bend the crap out of the towed vehicles .

My business partner back then , was a F#!d Man from the 1960's , one day he scored a sweet deal on the pristine one owner , low mileage '59 Brand 'F' Wrecker from the Alignment Shop across the street from our Shop , ($500 IIRC) and said he'd gotten an offer of $1,000 for the Chevy ~ I pitched a shytefit and told him I'd consider it after he'd worked the F-350 a few months , each time he took that sweet , clean , cherry V-8 powered rig out , it had some sort of problem , I took great pride in towing it back in my wheezing , rattling , clattering old '55 Chevy , believe you me ! .

Good thing we didn't get it lettered , it sold in one day the last time it stranded him and he never looked back , I still do and it's been 30 years , I don't even have any pictures doggone it .

I towed junkers & freshly painted cars back and forth the Mojave Desert with that old rig , for years & years , it never left me afoot , always started right up hot or cold , got good fuel economy so on and so forth....

Sorry for rambling / babbling but I'm an old man who loves the BOWTIES ! .

Unhappy Re : Wreckers are so AWESOME.

Sadly , no pix =8-( .

The good thing is : when I let it go , it was so I could keep my old 1946 Chevy 3100 pickup....

The one I used to put 15,000 miles on every 12 months....

Another saved from the crusher rig , back in the day when no one cared about old L6 powered GM trucks .

It too had a '57 235 , Torque Tube and so on , not a pretty truck but , like all Chevies, it was 100 % reliable and I used it for hauling scrap and flat towing cars all over the Western U.S.

In time , I grew tired of being wet whenever it rained and sold it after many many years of hard , reliable daily service .

Re: Wreckers are so AWESOME.

Got the old 402 out of the other truck, going to unstall it in this wrecker. The 307 is blown, i idles, but little to no power, i'm thinking it swallowed a valve, or jumped the timing chain.
None the less, i have almost everything for a 402 swap, big radiator, 69 BB motor mounts, headers (probably won't use them on this, but they are here)

Also have several BB power steering setups (which it really needs bad) Not sure if it will fit ok, but we'll get r done!

Re: Wreckers are so AWESOME.

The guy behind me has a small wrecking yard, and I took a walk through it on Tuesday. There's a complete 67 or 68 C30 wrecker sitting there, and it's been sitting for many years by the looks of it. She's in pretty tough shape
