Re: Derecho Out Of Iowa

I'm glad to hear you and the Mrs. are OK, Leon. I was wondering about you guys. I've seen guys on the Garage Journal cable old garages diagonally and slowly pull them back with a come-along. Hope you're safe until that thing stabilizes. Please be careful, we're all bummed about not seeing you this year.

That's what I said when I first heard the word Derecho when we had ours. I thought, "They have to come up with a name for everything these days". But I looked it up and the name was coined by meteorologists in the 1800s when they learned about this specific phenomenon. They are as unique to themselves as a tornado or hurricane with characteristics all their own.

And things are certainly changing in the earth's weather patterns. We are seeing things, at least more often, happening that we never or rarely saw happening more often. More extremes in weather and weather events certain areas are known for occurring in areas we in our time seemed exempt from.

Re: Derecho Out Of Iowa

We got lucky here closer to the Mississippi. Not nearly the damage as Cedar Rapids and farther west got and seems the worst went south of our town. Parts of town are still without power, lots of trees down and building damage though and several smaller communities to the south are still out of power as well. I had some branches down and the driveway washed out and lost power for about 10 hrs Monday. I think we got more rain, ~2 inches in 45 minutes, than wind here.
The crop damage can be seen from space and is estimated to be upwards of 10 million acres.

Pat & I are doing great. She is canning tomatoes and making Peach Jam like crazy. She also baked 4 Peach pies, 3 for the freezer and one to eat.

I am still cleaning out the barn but haven't started on the haymow/hayloft yet. I may venture up there this afternoon. A lot of stuff up there.

I keep wanting to call it "Jericho" because I studied Scots Gaelic for a while, and a 'd' with a slender vowel 'e' or 'i' is always pronounced like a 'j'.

Re: Derecho Out Of Iowa

Leon, I'm glad to hear all that. It takes more than a derecho to stop Pat's Peach Pies
