Hi everyone,
I have been browsing around for a while before I decided to join and ask a question...

I have loved, and wanted a 72 GMC Suburban for a very long time now. Why?? Lets just say memories of high school, and other stuff....

I found one that is a daily driver. It looks good, a couple of dings on one side, the rear bumper is pushed in on the driver's side, which dented the body. Nothing too major, but will be fixed in the future. Interior is nice, engine is in good shape, A/C front and rear. Paint is shiny (will repaint sometime). Newer interior. Needs new steering wheel. Pretty nice for a 30+ year old Sub..

I only put about 2000 miles on my vehicle a year, due to a take home Gov. vehicle, so gas mileage is not my biggest fear.

The guy wants $4500.00. But I am going to take some hard cash and try to bargain him down to around 4K.

What do you think? I know there are many experts around here that could help a fella out. And I would appreciate it.

Welcome to the board from West Tennessee. Remembering "high school and other stuff" yeah guess that would qualify as a reason to buy a old suburban. Now if the question is about the price of the burb you have found then I would say we need more information about it. At first it sounds a little high to me. If you could get some pictures of it that would help a lot. It is kind of hard to tell without seeing it.

I am in Yuma. My question is: Is 4K a good deal on a 72 Burb? Really nice shape. A/C V8-350

Not perfect, but it is 30+ years old.

I am going to check it out tomorrow and see what kind of bargain I can get.

4.5 hour drive..... Hopefully cash will speak loudly. I have talked with the guy a few times and from what he says it sound to be in very good condition. NO rust.

I will drive it home. That will be the test.

From what I have seen around here the price is fair (in these parts)....

What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting in your suburbans?? 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive to be exact.

Be sure to pull the carpet or mat up by the rockers and kick panels. Ask if you can pull the sill plates out if they're in the way. Get a good look from underneath too. The whole NO rust thing is very subjective. Personally I think rust and body damage is the biggest obstacle. Anything else can be easily replaced. Knock him down on price for anything like that you find, including cut doors for speakers and a cut dash. At least try anyway. Decide what you are willing to pay AFTER seeing it in person and driving it. Then start your offer a couple hundred lower.

From looking at the pics of yours, the one I am looking at is in better condition as far as the body goes. No Cancer. Interior is very nice too....

Are those bad things?
I dont mind speakers....

I figure I would start under 4K and then haggle from there....

I`d offer him $4,000 and hold your ground.Starting lower may be a mistake.It sounds worth the money he`s asking.

jmbstudios...It all depends on what you prefer, But keep in mind although after market interior is comfortable. The original seats in good condition are tough to replace. you can find them easy enough but once you redo them and get it back to original it can cost, Not to mention time labor and shipping. Just a thought...For all I know it might be original but I thought you mentioned new interior.Usually if a guy puts in newer seats there not a direct fit and need some kind of mods...Just something to take into consideration....GOOD-LUCK...

oh yeah, rebuilt seats can get pricey...
i did mine.
de-rust the frame, repaint
new foam
new seat upholstery

came in a little less than $700! that was just my truck bench.

all bargaining points.
special is right...the highest price should be paid for good condition all-original, then knock $ off for each of the mods (cut dash, speaker holes, etc.)
it's a hell of a lot easier to do that stuff yourself than it is to undo what someone else has done.

besides, it sounds like his asking is artificially high, expecting it to go for 3800 or 4000.

Well I picked it up today.
Engine is newer 350, new edelbrock intake manifold. A couple of small rust spots, no big deal.

Seats are recovered orginals. Very comfortable. New carpet, no rust on pans.

Drove it from Los Angeles to Yuma, Arizona (4 hours) with no problems. Did not overheat, A/C worked fine. It is not freezing cold, but works. Rear A/C blows hard.

The guy had it on ebay for $5k, you have probably seen it. Over the phone I had him down to $4500.
I am happy with the price. I got it for less than the $4500. Which around here is a pretty good deal.
A friend of mine just bought a 71 and paid 4K. The rearend was blown out and it has a lot of rust. Needs a new tailgate....
Mine is much cleaner....

It is a 3/4 ton Super Custom.

I saw that burb via the thread in the ebay forum. I was surprised no one bid since it looked complete and with working A/C. I theorized that the high starting bid and dark Navy repaint turned off potential bidders. If so, that worked in your favor. I wouldn't have let the color dissuade me, either.

Was that you who asked on the auction site if you could see the burb in person? What do you think of the repaint?

I just called him up and told him I would come up and bring cash, and get ready to deal. And if everything he told me over the phone was true, and correct, I would pay cash......

When I got there, there was a tiny bit more rust from what he explained, and bargained on that......

Love it, wife loves it, kid loves it..... Its a keeper!!!!
