11 Hours on 1994 Paint - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi Guys,

I wanted to share some pictures of the progress that I made this week on the pickup. My dad had the truck painted back in 1994 and it was his daily driver for quite some time, that compounded with kids running around and the Arizona sun, the paint has seen better days.

I spent a little over 11 hours this week (2-3 hours a night) in an attempt to put some life back into it. It's not '100% perfect' but it looks exponentially better than it did, for the condition that it was in, I'm incredibly happy with the results.

Here were the steps:

Adams Clay Bar
Adams Swirls and Haze Remover
Adams Fine Machine Polish
Adams Machine Super Wax

All of the products were applied with a Porter Cable 7424, and I did at minimum 2 passes with each product. Some panels required 3-4 passes of the swirl remover.

Looks like you had a good paint job to start with. Black looks sweet when it's polished up. But a PIA to maintain...been there done that in Tucson AZ.

Very nice job, but a black truck in Arizona?!? I had a black Camaro when I lived out there and about died everytime I got in it.

Meh... it's just hot

We have two black cars in my household, no difference.

Saw a Phoenix reported do a story once on color of cars and temperature. Went to a new car lot where they had a dozen identical cars but different colors (obviously) and they found the max deviation <2 degrees, and the mean less than one degree.

Truck looks great!

I call BULLSPIT You can't even touch a black vehicle here on a hot day. That may apply for a new well insulated car, but doesn't for a forty year old un-insulated, black painted hunk of steel. I used to have a thermometer inside my black Jeep pickup, it melted.

Looks great! I only use Adams products on my cars along with PC 7424XP polisher. Awesome stuff. Their website is real nice with tons of detailing videos. You probably could have started with the severe scratch polish (green) after the clay bar. But hey, you did great!

Now just use the detail spray for quick clean ups. Every 6 months repeat the fine glaze followed by machine wax (shouldn't take 11 hours) and she'll always look sharp.

Guess you didn't see where I live amigo.

the other place I live/work is hot too.

The reporter wasn't measuring the inside temp... it was a direct read on the paint.

But if it makes you feel better, then call me/it bullspit

Adams products are great!!! That's all I use to wash my 68 heck I even bought the 5gal Adams wash bucket lol

My grandfather bought this truck brand new from the factory (originally a 307, 3 speed, White with Blue interior) and my Dad restored it back in 1994. My dad threw a book of paint samples in front of me and said you get to pick, even at 8 years old, I knew that everything looked it's best in black. However, I was too young to realize how big of mistake that was, lol...in hindsight, I would have picked the factory white.

But this is my third vehicle, 2000 Camry is my daily and a 2005 GTO is my weekend bruiser, this truck is the weekend cruiser.

The funny part is, I can drive my truck for 28 minutes and get more compliment than my GTO gets in two years...haha. And my GTO is pretty damn cool.

I completely agree on the Severe Scratch Remover, but I've had these products (Swirl/Haze, Machine Polish, Machine Wax) for three years and never even opened them, so I decided just to use what I had instead of buying more product.

But, there are some scratches that would have definitely benefited from a more aggressive cutting product. I plan on selling my Porter Cable and buying their new Flex. Have you had a chance to use the Flex?

Their grip guard works extremely well. Adams is the new Black...once you go Adams...

Lol...I hope that doesn't offend anyone...Adams has some amazing products.

About the Flex polisher - I compared this to the 7424XP. I have not used one. So I watched the Adams detailing videos carefully. The Flex is a more powerful machine. Which is great for working on heavily oxidized paint like you had. It would have taken less time if you had a flex and used severe scratch compound. However, and here's the rub - with the flex you cannot slow it down enough to lay down the machine wax in a nice even layer. The 7424XP does that real well.

In the ideal world you'd have both machines. Not wanting to purchase them both I chose the 7424XP.
