newer truck for towing

Hello all, I usually lurk in the 47-59 section and have 3+ Advance Design trucks as rolling hulks. Anyways, my current tow vehicle, a v6 Tacoma, is becoming barely adequate to pull the flatbed car hauler with the old truck strapped on. My last 120 mile haul really taxed the Tacoma.

I am looking for opinions on whether I need to step up to a 3/4 ton full size, or if a 1/2 with the v8 is adequate. Is towing easier with a longer wheelbase truck? Is the diesel premium worth the extra cost?

This will not be a daily driver, I like driving to work in my '54 p/u.

Thank you for any insights.
