Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

Was going to buy a long bed 72 for parts today....had power steering, 350V8, th350 auto, non-tilt auto column, straight hood (which I need), straight right fender (Which I need) and decent grill surround-all parts I need. HOWEVER...He did not have pink slip, and he was not registered owner and only has hand written bill of sale from this previous person. Call Registration express, it appears there is $780 due to get replacement title just so I can junk it. Seems like a bad deal, and I dont want to keep it forever.

ANyone dealt with this in California recently before? Should I pass?

Just curious, why do you need a title or replacement title to junk it?

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

Just get a bill of sale from the person you are buying it from with his correct information on it. If it is stolen, you show the police or whoever that you bought the said vehicle from said person on said date and for how much. Kind of like when you buy a firearm from a private party. That bill of sale protects you in the case of stolen property. In effect, the bill of sale proves you bought it on a certain date.

I guess things are just different in California.

In california now it appears you cant get a scrap yard to touch it without proper documentation. Same with wrecking yards. No will will take it. Flat out "NO".

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

BTW, even if you cut up frame and cab, they still wont take it. And the 3 of the wreckign yards said they wont take the parts, only whole vehicles. I found that odd, as I would think a intact cab would have some value. Same with front crossmember with disc brakes (FOR FREE). No bites...

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

Seriously, someone wants the leftovers, I would consider buying it. But I would have to rent a Uhaul auto-transport (AKA car trailer) and haul it on my dime, which I might consider doing. But whomever "adopted" it would not have any real documentation on this. I wouldnt do it...

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

I just did this with a 95 Surburban. Strip it for the parts you need and return the cab with the VIN back to the guy and he can call the junk yard to pick up. He gets a slip form tow truck that it was turned over to the junk yard and destroyed. Done no transfer. DVM said it was ok as long as cab with Vin was return to said owner.

You are correct.

I just did this a few weeks ago....bought a truck with NO paperwork. A scrapyard will NOT take a vehicle that has no paperwork. Same deal, the guy selling it was not the registered owner, it had close to $1000 due in back fees, and no title. He knew this and that is why I got the truck for a song. I have a cousin that is a police officer, so I simply called him prior to purchasing the truck and had him check the VIN to ensure the truck was not stolen (I was pretty sure it was not, but wanted to be sure) Truck was clean, just lots of back fees. I parted it for about 5 times what I paid for it (buddy buckets, tailgate, speedminder dash constituted most of that) The hardest part was getting rid of the cab/chassis. A guy from Nevada drove in and bought it, as he was not concerned with the paperwork being from out-of-state. As far as the rest of the sheetmetal on the truck, I practically had to give it away to get rid of it.

You can dump the leftovers here. I'm just south of Oroville.

It would fit right in with the rest of the "decor" at my place.

I did not have a problem with a scrapyard taking a frame/cab that was cut up and unrecognizeable. It is a decent amount of work getting it to that point, but that's what had to be done to get rid of it.

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

Just for the record, this truck has no bed. other than that, it is complete.

So the consenses is that I should buy it. I would be leaning towards the closest person who would adopt this....

What should I get from the person selling this to me? I am thinking the most current registration from origional owner (2005), hand written bill of sale from guy who possess it, what else?

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

If $400 is a good deal to you for the couple parts you need, I would say it is worth it. If not, I would pass because it does not sound like there are any money maker parts on it for resale.

Other than a hand-written bill of sale and old registration there is not much else you can get.

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

Don't worry about the paperwork. I do this all of the time. The scrap yards won't take the whole truck without papers, but they will take pieces as long as it does not add up to a whole truck. I personally use my heavy equipment and crush the cab into the size of a dishwasher and take them in 3 cabs at a time with a bunch of other metal...never had a problem. The back ends become trailers. When you are done with the truck, I will gladly take the remains. I'm about 2 hours 15 minutes from Redding.

Re: Long bed for $400 for parts, good buy?

Here is what I am wanting to get;

power steering complete
grill
right fender plus inside fender frame
bumper
steering column (non tilt auto)
shifting linkage
motor perches
rear trans crossmember
yoke from transmission
radiator (if it is decent, copper 4 row)
instrument cluster

motor and trans (350V origional, th350)

I origionally was simply going to to to Vintage Chevy in Milpitas, but he wanted $90 for motor perches and $90 for trans crossmember. I was afraid to ask about other items, I suspect I would have been horrified at prices. $400 seems like a great idea....

Other states aren't very far behind Cali on this. I hauled this load into a scrap yard in Minnesota 2 weeks ago and they needed the titles to accept them. They said it wasn't state law yet, but would be soon.
