Re: My "new" 1968 c20

All the holes worked out perfectly. Helps having a drill press too. Had a hard time finding a 1 9/16ths fostner bit. Girl at the local wood working shop broke up a set for me. Sanded and sealed the undersides of the bed wood this afternoon.

That's was the plan. But I just bought a Suburban so something will go.

Helps that I'm retired so I pretty much treat the truck like a job 5 for 6 hours a day

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Neglected to post the planning of the boards. Very little warp to them so I only needed to shim one board to make a flat surface. Basic skip planning

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Boards are done . 12 hours to dry and then I can start the assembly. I used a method a friend who does high end cabinetry and furniture taught me. Basically its wet sanding with oil and 400 paper the sanding creates a slurry of oil and saw dust I usually do this by hand with regular garnet paper but 8 8ft boards would have taken forever. You keep adding oil until the wood no longer takes it in. Use much more oil but goes deaper into the wood and the slurry acts like a grain filler too.

Just need to take the side boards out from the bed a do them

Wow, that looks super.

I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous of guys that get to spend a good amount of their time working on cool stuff. Hopefully my turn will come sooner than later.

Paid my dues on the job working the clock for 20 then started my own insurance agency. Been a long road but it's been worth it

Hard work has its rewards! Envious probably would have been a better word choice, but either way, I'm glad you post your rapid progress!

I found a rust free step side bed with what looks to have a very nice tailgate. He wants 600. bucks and says he wont part it out. How much would a clean original gate go for if he would? I wouldn't mind going to see it in person and give it a try... Sometimes in the past I've even considered having a step side bed to swap out on my truck just to change it up every now and then.
I dont know how to add a link or I would show you the add. Look in the Dallas Craigslist auto / truck parts and search c10 if you're interested.

Re: My "new" 1968 c20

Not sure what a nice gate brings . The beds were the same from 67 to I believe 87 so there should be alot of nice ones out there.

Found a nice gate . No dents or bows the pic on the table looks bowed but it's an optical illusion.
Just a little surface rust and a couple of small holes for what looks like tonneau cover snaps

Nice find! Is it a GM piece or repop? Mind if I ask what that set you back?

Its OEM. I am reluctant to buy repop parts. About the same as a repop item

I wouldn't be afraid to buy a new tail gate from Mar-K out of Oklahoma.
http://www.mar-k.com/Catalog/index.aspx?LID=384
They are NICER than GM's NOS tail gates.
I've seen them side by side.
Very high quality.
OEM tailgates have spot welds all over the place.
The Mar-K version has them evenly spaced to satisfy my OCD. Ha.

I looked at the Mar-k gate . Only thing that killed it for me was the shipping. They must higher an uber driver to deliver it.

But the gate is down to bare metal.

Mar-K usually ships their parts in wooden crates to prevent damage.
Including all of the side mouldings they sell.
