Question Help Installing New Ignition Switch

what am I missing? Feeling real dumb here, have done this on other old vehicles, but cannot figure out my problem here.

I remember only taking-off the small bezel on my '67 Chevy C20. But now cannot get it to go together in my fresh dash. Even got a spacer used on 68 to 72's and no luck. (In picture with old switch.) Its like there is something missing to go behind dash, but my old bezel screwed into the dash, so what kept it from coming thru dash. Maybe the heat today has my head messed-up, but I cannot figure-out this simple delima.

Its an AWW (American Auto Wire) upgrade kit, but old switch and new look the same.

That would help - pictures a thousand words. I'm sure its something truly simple I'm missing, but just can't figure this one.

Bottom pic, part on right goes on part on left. Stuff in from back of dash, install center part, then install lock cylinder

Tried. Spacer I have (catalog says for 68 & up, not 67,) leaves NO threads to screw bezel for 67 on to switch.

Re: Help Installing New Ignition Switch

That's because 67 is flat dash while 68-up the switch is recessed.

It's time to do some after factory modifications to your spacer or source the correct parts

Re: Help Installing New Ignition Switch

Todd Rusk hooked me up with this (separate correspondence):
https://www.cooperrestorations.com/p...nition-spacer/

Used only one year, like the shorter bezel.

0849-215 This ignition spacer fits:
1967 Chevrolet Pickup Truck and Suburban
1967 GMC Pickup Truck and Suburban

Measurement 1.5x1x1

You have the wrong spacer. Here is a picture of the '67 only spacer. There is someone on here selling a reproduction of it.

The spacer indexes the switch in the correct position. Just make sure the key is vertical.

Thank you Lock Doc. It figures 67 was different. I spent a lot of time trying to figure that out & left scratching my head frustrated. Thanks again.

No problem. The three small tabs you see on the face of the spacer (first picture) fit into the notches in the dash. Also be sure the bezel is started straight, the threads are pretty fine and it is easy to get them cross threaded. It should screw on pretty easy, you shouldn't have to force it.

Re: Help Installing New Ignition Switch

Yes it makes ALL the difference when you have the right parts!

For the life of me I cannot remember taking off that short adapter or if so where it got put? I do remember taking the old switch out because the whole wire harness and fuze panel were GONE (fuzes rusted in place - amazed I could drive it).

Thank you all for your feedback.

Re: Help Installing New Ignition Switch

Just a follow-up.

Pictures show the ignition switch flat spot goes to bottom toward back of dash and labels on contacts can be read right side up to correctly get the key vertical when done.

Just wanted to clarify that for any future readers.

Re: Help Installing New Ignition Switch

Has anyone ever had a problem with the key not coming out of the lock cylinder once it’s installed in dash? I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong but key won’t pull out when turned to off position..

I have the same problem about putting parts away for safe keeping. When I do that I may as well pitch them in the trash instead cause they’ll likely never be seen again either way!

Unfortunately that's not the parts fault. If you could see my shop you would know why....
