Yet another specialty insurance question

I've just finished the build on my Dad's 70 GMC truck. So I'm looking for insurance. I've done some searching on this topic. But finding threads a couple of years old. I know of the 'garage' requirement, not driving to work etc. The driving to work thing doesn't matter, I'm retired.

Anyway there seem to be a few players in this field.

• American Collectors
• Hagerty
• Grundy
• Heacock Classic Car
• Possible Others

I would like to get some feedback on these companies before I get serious about actually taking out a policy.

Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

BTW - NADA has high retail value of $61,440! That's insane!

MK insurnace out of Chicago is the best. Talk to Tami 866 695-2774. A few guys over on the Yenko forums use MK. You will not be dissapointed

I use American Collectors Insurance with no claims (Thank God!) to base quality by.

No issues with billing, I pay them once a year and I am done with it.

Grundy and American Modern will allow some pleasure miles. Last time I checked w Hagerty that wasn't allowed - only to from car related events. I'd like to picnic or fish so have American Modern

Whoever you talk to ask them if you are insured for pleasure driving or a trip to the grocery store.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I did some online quotes after posting this. The quotes are for both my 70 GMC and my 1967 Olds Cutlass with a 468 BBC. I went with agreed value of $50,000 on the GMC and agreed value of $32,000 on the Cutlass. I understand that most likely these quotes will differ when I actually get to talk to someone. All quotes are annual rates. But here are the results so far:

• Hagerty - $1160 with yearly mileage of 1700
• Grundy - $1024 with yearly mileage of 3000
• Heacock - $668 with yearly mileage of 3000

Heacock is $492 cheaper than Hagerty. Quite a bit of savings. Also needs more research to see exactly what I would be getting.

Here's my 67 Cutlass. Which my parents also bought new in 1967.

I been using NCM (national Corvette museum) they are super easy to deal with and super cheap compared to the others. My plan is agreed cost +2% inflation. The plans start at 1000 mi a year driving and go up from there. I may need to up mine but right now I carry 1000 miles of driving with 30k agreed and it cost me $268 a year.

Also they did not ask me for my milage to renew...I only drove 250mi last year...the only thing they dont cover is if you have it on a track. They told me it was fine to take out to dinner on weekends...just not daily driven to work etc...I would not do that anyhow...

I had J.C. Taylor since the late 80's, had one small claim, great to deal with. Last year we changed wife's cars and mine to Hagerty. Better discount with all cars together and they now insure trucks under classic coverage if you tow or haul stuff in the bed as long as you own a primary truck that you tow with.

I switched from Hagerty to Heacock a few years ago when I bought the Nova drag car. Tried to add it to my Hagerty policy with the 2 trucks and they wouldn't insure it because of the NOS. Called Heacock and paid a little less for all 3 vehicles than I was paying Hagerty for 2. Same agreed value, more miles allowed per yr. Luckily, only claim so far has been a rock chip on the GMC's windshield. Nice service, no deductible. They let me select the glass company.

Why?

More performance, more HP, more reliability at less than 1/2 the price of a comparable Olds 455. I had a 455 in it for 35 years, good performance BUT nothing compared to the 468 BBC.

A very easy swap. I just used the Chevy motor mount hardware, mount holes were predrilled from the factory. The engine dropped right in. I didn't have to drill or modify anything for the swap. The BBC is physically smaller and weighs about 50 pounds less than the Olds. And it drives Olds fanatics crazy.

Besides all that the Olds 455 is one butt ugly engine.

After all starting in the 70s GM was using was swapping all their engines between all their cars.

Your garage looks very similar to mine with a 71 GMC and a 68 Cutlass S convertible.

Had good luck with a stated value policy from State Farm

My Hagerty just went up $30 in one year, with no changes in policy and no bad marks on my record, because "California has fires" was the explanation...

I went with American Collectors. They worked with me on the 'modified' status I had originally picked. I sent photos to them and they reclassified both by GMC and Cutlass as 'original'. That saved about $140. I got agreed value of $50,000 on the GMC and $32,000 on Cutlass.

MK came in about $60 less, but needed more photos and more documentation. But at this time we are moving and in between homes. Right now I don't have access to some of that info. All our household goods are in storage in Las Vegas and we're in TN.

American Collectors did not have a problem with both vehicles being in storage in GA, our residence in SD and when we finally get in our new house in AZ. Being able to store them in AZ. Even though they will be licensed in SD.

The mileage limit is 2,500 a year, but American Collectors doesn't even ask for mileage. There is also the 'garage' requirement, but not a problem. Our new house in AZ has 22x68 RV garage and a 17x30 garage. Room for all four of my vehicles and our motorhome. Both garages are attached to the house.

I know confusing, but American Collectors is ok with that.
