Re: 66 k20

Looking good, just catching up on your build.

One suggestion from updating reading. Would try to keep original cab corners if repairable or leave as is. Say this because reproductions are poor quality as to representing original shape. Shape no ware close to original.

Cab corner option for me 1). Fix yours; 2).find originals that are fixable; and 3).
Leave yours as is until you find originals that are fixable. 3M panel adhesive makes fixing them a lot easier , no welding needed. If needed would look out west for one that have a few rust holes but can be repaired.

Re: 66 k20

Thanks Les, I was actually thinking about using the panel bond. The bottom of mine are completely gone so I’ve got to do something. I’ve got another cab here that are better but still have holes in the bottom. I might try to find a rust free set as you suggested.

Looking good. Is the springs the reason for the offset in bed height?. where did you get the springs, bushings and shackles?

Re: 66 k20

It’s a lot better but still not right. I had one 8 leaf and one 7 leaf before. I can at least rule that out now. I was going to pull the right rear shock off to see if it was stuck and pushing things up and noticed the mount on the axle is bent and twisted. I seriously don’t know what you have to hit to that, it’s like 1/4in plate steel.

The springs and u bolts came from General spring in KC MO. Everything else from LMC, the only place I found that had it all. I didn’t buy any bushings, they were included in the springs and shackles. I bought new u bolts, pins and lock bolts.

Re: 66 k20

Your truck is looking good it takes a lot of time and money. Its getting hard to find any 60-66 4wd trucks. Last month I bought a 1960 GMC k20 4wd don't no what going to do with it yet. I have three frame offs in my shop that I need to get done.

Time, money and patience, none of which I have in abundance. It’s a sickness I tell ya, I try to focus just on this then I see something else I’ve just gotta have. So far I’ve resisted another project but I’m getting weak.

Re: 66 k20

Try having three in your shop. I have a 1960 short bed a 64 short bed and a 65 long bed and they all have bbw. Yes its a sickness but for the most part we enjoy working on are trucks.

Re: 66 k20

Found this camper on marketplace. Been wanting one for a while that is somewhat period. Tag says 74 or 79, close enough. Like the truck when I found it, the camper is rough but worth saving

Fliteways are great little campers! I almost bought one recently too - still wish I had. Nice!

I’d never heard of them before this. Tag says it was made in Wisconsin.

Re: 66 k20

I should have pulled the dents out of the hood first but was waiting to buy a stud welder and slide hammer. After my experiment on the door with screws and a pry bar I don’t think I need one. I ran out of paint on the hood also so I’m going to have to respray it anyway. I’ll take care of the dents then. I also want to get some real body filler. Saturday afternoon bondo was my only option and I was in a groove this past couple weeks and wanted to keep going. Some of my methods aren’t body shop perfect nor is the quality but I’m very happy with it considering I’m learning as I go.

If it didn’t need so much rust repair and the bed was all the same color I might have left it alone. It really looked worse in person and all my life I’ve never had a decent looking old truck. I’m ready for one. 😁
