Engine Paint (aerosol)

Looking for suggestions regarding a fresh coat of gloss paint on my new crate motor. It is Chevy glossy black, but suffered a few minor scratches/scuffs from the crate during shipping. I've been looking at Eastwood's 2K ceramic, but they do not recommend applying over other (enamel, etc.) paint, and I do not wish to strip it all the way down. Any recommendations? VHT Engine Enamel?

Thanks, Jim

Duplicolor has a nice gloss black engine enamel. Just make sure everything is clean and you'll be fine. Check the can closely though, they have semi gloss, gloss, and flat engine paint.

I see you're in Va Beach, my 50 is in the Pavilion this weekend, the lobby, for the car show.

I used Aervoe Engine Enamel. So far it's held up VERY well. I've only found it online though, it doesn't seem to be sold in the major Auto Part Stores.

Thanks. Did you spray over paint or up from primer?

Re: Engine Paint (aerosol)

The engine block was done from primer up. The intake, valve covers and other engine accessories where sprayed over existing paint. All have been holding up great

Re: Engine Paint (aerosol)

Can anyone recommend a product where existing (good) paint can be painted directly over and hold up without blistering or peeling? Success with VHT?

Re: Engine Paint (aerosol)

I really like Duplicolor 1604 high temp engine paint, has a sheen similar to old school 40% semi gloss chassis black. Note Duplicolor changed their chemistry a few years ago and the re-coat window is really tight, I found out on my valve covers. I had always shot one coat, waited 24 hours to get a good cure, then another. Mine blistered immediately when the second coat hit. I found others were having the same problem, the rattle can says you have to keep re-coating in 20 minute intervals. I did that the second time with no problem.

About repainting over "good" existing paint; you need to make sure the new is compatible with the old and clean the old really good and scuff it up. Degrease, power wash with good detergent to get rid of grease (I use Simple Green), then rinse and dry. After scuffing with a scothbrite pad wipe with metal prep then start painting. Blistering and peeling is because of non-compatible paints or poor prep.
