Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

The steelies really set that thing off! I cant get over how much your truck is exactly what i'm building mine to look like. Same mirrors, dog dishes, and paint scheme. Looks sweet!!

After seeing your work, i'm thinking about trying to paint mine myself. Can you describe what gun setup you have for paint and what paint you used? Also did you create a makeshift booth in your garage?

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Thanks Nick. Check out this thread for my paint info: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=508951

I'd highly recommend painting it yourself. It's really not that hard. Get yourself a scrap piece of metal (fender, tailgate, whatever) and practice on it. All it takes is time. You can colorsand and buff all the imperfections out. This is really the third thing I've painted, and it has been the best by alot. As far as a booth in the garage, I was all hot to make one, but figured it was going to take twice as much time to set it up than to paint the truck, so I just REALLY cleaned out the garage and went to town with the sprayer. The HVLP gun really doesn't make much overspray anyways. GO FOR IT!!! It's really rewarding looking at the truck and saying I did it myself!

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Well, my glass guy is scheduled for tomorrow for the THIRD try at the windsheild. I'm crossing my fingers and toes hoping for a successful install with the chrome trim. Getting really close now, just need to button up the interior. Carpet, seat and steering wheel. Then put on the cowl, and hood and I should be driving!

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Got the new distributor in tonight. The first new one from summit had a bad module - no spark. First try tonight and I got fire and a running engine! Feels good to check one more thing off the list. I am looking forward to a really good weekend and maybe some driving next week!

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Good weekend. Covered lots of ground. Friday, we got a new windsheild in; without the chrome though. Glass guy says to drive the truck for a few weeks and see how the windsheild 'settles' then we will pull it and try for the chrome one more time. If it won't go in, we're going to get a new gasket without the chrome and I'll live with it. Bummer, but it is what it is.... Saturday I had a couple of older muscle car buddies of mine help me time and tune the engine. It runs awesome. They also helped me put the hood on and get it aligned. Sunday I got the interior about 99% complete. Carpet is in, seat is in, stereo is finished. Just need to get the seatbelts in and the mirror on the windsheild. Now I need to drive it and get to work on the punchlist of small things to fix... Here's some pictures of a pretty much finished exterior, except for a good bath!

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

I can relate to the problems with the windshield trim. Here's my experience: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=484773

I've got OEM trim to replace the ill-fitting repro stuff but haven't had time to get over to the glass guy yet. You might try OEM trim and see if that fits better. I'd like to know if it does.

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

I've read your thread on the windsheild. Didn't know if I wanted to slit my wrists or just cry, so I had a beer instead! Anyways, it was your idea of trying the 67-70 deeper trim that made me buy it for mine. The glass guy thinks that maybe the windsheild will move and settle down and we'll get the trim in. I think NO WAY that will happen. What I do think though is I will get a dremel tool and cut off the 90 degree L shape off the bottom of the deeper trim and try and stuff it into the rubber. The slit in the rubber for the trim is so tight that I think gravity alone will hold it in. If it comes out, I'll try and use some sort of glue or weatherstrip adhesive to hold it in. If both of those fail, I'm getting a new gasket without the trim and will just live with it. Thanks for your thread though, lots of good information in it.

Hey Ryan. Nice truck! Was just wondering if you have any lift on this truck. It's stance seems a bit high for stock. Or, I guess it could just be the tire size?

Again, thanks for the posts. Turned out really nice.

Wow, that really turned out nice. Those windshield trim pieces are a royal pain. I could never get the top piece installed, only the sides and bottom.

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Again, thanks to all for the great compliments. I'm super happy with the end result of 11 months of restoration work. I have a 'punch list' with around 15 items on it that I need to fix/adjust/correct. Nick, I will get some pictures of the truck outside after I get it all washed up. John, so you never got the top of your trim in the windshield? That doesn't make me feel too pumped about mine. I really want that chrome trim in, I think it will really set the truck off. Funny thing happened this afternoon. I sold my 2003 Chevy 4x4 at the exact same time my wife picked up my new plates for the 72. My original intention was to have the sale of the 2003 truck offset the expense of the 72 and I've come out perfect! By the way, can anyone translate this license plate: BRN2L8

Ryan,
Been away for awhile.
Truck looks just super!! I would be proud, as I know you are.

Our luck with the windshield is exactly the same. Even the responses from our glass guys. Mine is in, but not sealed because I'm supposed to drive it so it settles. Your gasket puckers at the top just like mine, even.

Continue to keep us posted.
Curt

Re: Ryan's 72 K10 Build

Let me know if you figure out a way to get the top molding to fit. I agree that it will look much better. Have been tempted to experiment and take a dremel tool to the 90 deg bend on the back and trim it down just a little. Will probably wait to see if anyone else is successful.

Definitely do NOT want to take that window out again! I was happy enough just to get the side and bottom chrome trim to fit.

John, I was thinking the exact same thing on my trim. You first though, lol. No really, I'm planning on taking a dremel to all my trim and cutting off the 90 degree lip and stuffing it in the gasket. My gasket is so tight that I think simple gravity will hold in the trim.

Curt, thanks for the compliment on the truck. I am very proud, especially with the fact that the only thing I didn't do myself is install the windshield. I was really hoping for a better update on your windshield, but I was afraid that your update would be exactly as you stated. Maybe someone should get in the after market windshield/gasket/trim business and sell them as a package!

Now for a recent update on the truck. I've been driving a little bit. Happy to say that when I filled the gas tank for the first time, it filled very well speed wise. I was afraid that I would spend an hour at the pump waiting for the tank to fill. Attached is a picture of the fill set up. I used a blazer fill tube and mounted it inside my bed, I'm really happy with the look and function.

I got my new replacement grill from LMC installed last night. The first one from Counterfit fit horrible. See the before and after pictures of the grill. The LMC grill fits excellent. I still have to install my seatbelts and rearview mirror, bleed my brakes, and install a receiver hitch under the bumper. Oh yeah, I'm going to put the steering wheel that came with the truck back on. It appears to be a wheel from a late 70's truck, but I just am not happy with the feel of the wood style wheel thats currently on the truck. It looks really cool, but just doesn't fit my hands really well. It's going to be for sale if anyone wants it. So I'm shooting for this weekend to be 100% complete with the truck. Will take lots of pictures after I get it all washed up.

That new grill does look a lot better, good that you found one that fit. Truck is looking great. What don't you like about the feel with the wood wheel? I was thinking of getting one because the repop wheels are to flimsy.

Thanks. It's probably just me, I just didn't like the feel of the wood. Don't know how to describe it, because I LOVE wood, just not the wood steering wheel. Mine's for sale if you'd like it, let me know.

Now for all you picture hounds, here's the truck washed up last night:

Hi Ryan,
My employer uses Century Glass in Reno, the owner of Century Glass has a 67-68 GMC K-10 that he bought new. I would imagine he has replaced the windshield and or gasket. You might give him a call. Maybe he knows which gasket and or windshield works best with the chrome molding.
