That "competitive vehicle" wasn't very competitive. I never got the allure of that gen Bronco. The Blazer whips it in just about every metric.

In the early '70s my brother did a lot of off-roading with several buddies. They all had full size Chevys and fords. I remember him talking about being in situations they couldn't get into and some guy would come along with a 5.5 ft wide Bronco that would drive right through.

Width was the one advantage the original Bronco had. Early Jeeps and Scouts were narrow too, but the K5 Brazer/Jimmy had so many other advantages over those other SUV's it wasn't funny. Remember the original Bronco never sold that well, and was replaced in 1978 by the full size Bronce which was a Ford clone of the K5. It was very popular.

I had an 86 Subaru with 4 wheel drive (not AWD) and it would go places other 4WD vehicles couldn't go. It was a fun car, but I'd rather take my Blazer in any case.

The advantage of the Bronco was absolutely size, same as Jeep, Scout, and Land Rover. I always wanted to build a downsized Blazer.

Yeah, GM changed the game for all the rest to follow. The Jeep took a long time, but they are now fullsize and selling better than they ever did in their compact form. GM was always more practical when it came to their engineering & economics. Ford had "The Better Idea" and I always countered that with Chevy had "The Best Idea"
