Talked to the techs at Howell.............They said 3/8" line and a less restrictive fitting at the tank will cure my idle problem. Going to make the changes today and I'll report back.

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

TP,
Lookin' good! I'd be interested in improving gas mileage also, but I don't have that kinda cash to lay out now. I hope to get a different axle ratio this year...maybe a 3:90 or possibly a 3:73, and see how that helps my fuel consumption.

P.S. Anyone here who's registered at Inliners.org having problems logging on there? Ever since they re-vamped the site I haven't been able to log on....it keeps telling me "invalid passwaord".

I'm getting so fed up with that site. The bb crashed over a month ago and didn't come back up for about 3 weeks; it's got the crappiest layout then, and now; and the response seems as slow as dialup- even with my high speed cable. I used to go to that site religiously, but it's quickly becoming a low priority and once I get my new truck- I hope to not miss the site at all. I had a membership with the inliners for 1 year and it was one of the worst waste of $$$ I've ever had. There 'magazine' was worthless in terms of technical articles, and they typically came out about 1 month late so that all the events had long since happened.

While I considered myself a die-hard inliner, those days are probably over now since I'll be getting a V8 truck soon. My Camaro will always stay L6, but I'll most likely never try to modify it and may just need to replace parts on the rare occasion, thus not needing insight from the bb anymore. [/rant mode off]

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

I am either going to megasquirt a 250 or do a swap to the new 4.2l inline 6, so I'll definitely be checking in on your progress with this. I sorta hate to blow the money and time on the 250 when I could be putting it toward the 4.2 inline swap.

I also "tried" to register for inliners.org forums but never got my password. It's been over a month ago. Sent them an email about it and never received a response. Oh well. There's supposed to be a few guys over there that have done some 4.2 swaps and have some good info on those engines, so that's why I was trying to check out the information there. Seems so ridiculous to me that you can't even view their forums without being registered there?????

The 4.2 should be a straight forward swap, get in touch with speartech and see if they can't help you on the wiring and computer revamp.

I thought about that swap when the trailblazer first came out, one day maybe!!

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

Will this work on a stock 1 bbl manifold? Also, how long did the install take? I would love to do away with the carburetor, but I have to drive it every day, so I would need to be able to complete the install over a weekend. Thanks for the great info!

Yeah, it's pretty much my dream swap. Adding a little new to the old while still keeping it an inline 6.

I am waiting for a few people to actually do the swap so I can have some documentation to go by. There's not alot of info on it out there right now other than inliners.org, which I can't get to because they won't give me my login info.

Still working out the kinks on this setup..........Lastest glitch is the coolant temp sensor. My mounting location isn't suitable and I am going to attempt to put it in the t-stat casting. May post pictures tomorrow, I am getting faulty readings where its at now which may cause the idle issue.

On v-8 tbi engines the coolant temp sensor is located on the intake manifold, but since there is no coolant in your 6's manifold, the i-stat houseing sound like a good place. luck

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

I think the guesses of 20mpg some have thrown out there might be a bit high....but anything is possible, that is my final goal in my truck (built very similar to TP's).
TP, I would also like to know how long the install took (hoping that those who follow this post can avoid any issues you ran into).
I hope you are happy, now I am chomping at the bit to get this kit.....before this write up, it was just another wish list item.

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

I contacted AFI (affordable fuel injection), they have a kit for the 250 for $1275.00 that includes the throttle body, ECM, harness and chip, sensors, fuel pump, and distributor, but he said I would need to get a high voltage coil, like an MSD Blaster, etc. I am waiting to find out what the average mpg is going to be before I plunk down that much coin. TP, please keep us posted on the results. Thanks.

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

I also installed the Jeep kit on a 258 amc motor I had great results . Put a pressure gauge in the return line . If it gets to high it will run rich at idle . I also had faulty e prom . They replaced it quickly and free . I have emmisions testing for state inspection and mine passed with below half of allowable . The guy looked under there on the visual and was like " what the he!!" I said if it passes the sniffer will you sticker it ? He said yup . This kit works good .

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

I got a 4.2 and thans off of ebay...but there is no info on how to do the swap. Since, I'm not used to all this new fangled tech it's a bit more than I can do. I tired to sell the motor and trans but I didn't get one bid at 250. So I'm guessing that anyone should be able to grab a 4.2 for less than you could get a 292.
My next step is looking at either dropping the 292 back in or going with 5.3 for 1500 or more

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

Update: Took the cast housing off that holds the t-stat and drilled a hole, tapped it, and installed the coolant temp sensor right below the bolt hole for the water neck on the drivers side. Idle has stablized and works well, all though when cold it is a bit high for my taste until the engine warms. Guy who does my vehicle inspections said that may not be cureable given the setup is sorta universal. Either way it drives pretty darn good now. I do plan on adding a throttle return spring, as the spring on the TBI isn't enough for my big feet and its touchy.

As for mileage, I haven't driven it enough yet to get a good feel. But I imagine it will be decent.

You know, I was just searching for this exact thread the other day. Glad to see it pushed back up. I would love to do this to an I6 as well. Just need an I6 to play with and a truck to put it in.

Re: EFI on my Inlined '72 K-20........Awesome!

I have been very busy through-out the fall, but have been checking in the last few weeks though, didn't see this bumped until now.

Anyhow, the EFI on the 250 is just awesome! I am so pleased with it I can't even begin to explain. I do use this truck often, and the better preformance was well worth the money. I haven't bothered checking mileage yet, but I can tell I did increase my fuel economy enough to notice it without checking. Also bumped the power a good bit too over the 4brl, and its so much more than stock its like a whole nother engine!

Probably some will laugh, but my wife Erin's '72 F100 4x4 has a 460 in it, alone with a 4spd and is spec'ed out alot like mine, although has a bit higher axle ratio.............Anyhow, my brother drove it and commented that he thought my little 250 worked as good or better than that big block in our hills. I thought the same thing driving that Ford, but figured I was nuts. I couldn't imagine what this setup on a 292 would be like!
