Thumbs down front diff help!

i know this is the wrong forum section for this thread, but this seems to be the only forum with good active traffic.
on my 90 GMC 1/2 ton four wheel drive, i have recently noticed a constant clicking noise coming fromt the front end while driving slowly around my farm. this noise is apparent when wheels are turned left or right, and in either forward or reverse. not apparent when wheels are straight or near straight. haven't tried it in four wheel drive to see if the noise is apparent then, just two wheel drive.
any help is greatly appreciated!
thanks much

The oil in the transfer case should be changed quite often. May not be the problem but I have seen many people who dont change the oil every 25K and end up with problems. I am not real knowledgable on 4X4 but just a word of advice.

Does it click while going straight forward? My guess would be the CV Shafts. Have to look at it myself to be 100% sure. IF they are the original shafts, I can almost gaurantee they are the problem.

they don't click while going straight forward or backwards. that was my original thought, bad cv axles. they look original(lots of crap and grease on them, with cracks in the boots) but not yet ripped.

how much do a set of them run.

I can't help you with prices, but I would have to say that your CV axles are most likely the problem. I've seen many that only click while turning. It's a common problem when they start going bad.

update!

now, since about six hours ago, the four wheel drive will not engage at all, when put in either four hi or four low, the light comes on but does not engage the front diff. it makes a terrible chatter noise when trying to go. i think that the four wheel drive actuator(engages front diff) has gone bad because it worked a week ago when i drove home in a pretty good snow storm we had, and also worked just three days ago when i had it in four low.
thank goodness for good ol' locking hubs!!
