Re: How do I make the truck loud???

a friend of mine has a very nice 66 impala and he put about 3 feet of pipe on it with short glasspacks. it shonded mean for about a day. then he had vibration problems and had to pull his back seat out just so he could drive with out his head hurting. then it started to sound really raspy and like crap. we finaly convincced him that his vibration problem was his exhaust and he whent and had some real mufflers put on, its still loud, but its a classic muscle car loud.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

i like a v8 with decent sounding exhaust...not too loud. i have a 2000 silverado when i got an exhaust on it the shop here had it mocked it and i tried out different mufflers to find what i wanted, thats the way too go then theres no guesswork. ended up with a 3 inch single setup with a thrush (basically a flowmaster) welded muffler off the cat. sounds good and not too loud but loud enough

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

You don't need to be obnoxiously loud to get noticed. Just get some headers and Thrush turbos and be done. I had 18" glasspacks at first and they sounded crappy. Theres a few kids at school with Flowmasters on there trucks, they aren't even competition compared to my turbos. My 68 is "quite rank" as my dad says , but its not obnoxiously loud by any means. It will talk to you when the secondaries open though. It has a true old school sound to it, I remember once I pulled into a gas station, and this old guy was getting gas, and he says to me "Kid, I haven't heard anything that has sounded that good since the late 60's." So I took that as a compliment.

So you don't need to be loud to prove a point, you just need a nice sound with muscle to back it up IMO.

I am of the current young "z71" generation, and I dont really like the stocker with duels and cats sound. For me the sound of a lumpy cam and open headers is cool at idle. I liked loud but affter passing my friends little v6 firebird, right next to his house ya quiter is better. He go a call as soon as we got to my house. 1 mile away. At least my parents couldn't hear me open up my pipes. I run dynomaxx turbo mufflers and they are real quite until wot and then they rattle like glass packs.

put on a set of 2 1/2" duals with single chamber flowmasters or flowtech (flowmaster clones) with turndowns.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

I've got a 307 with unidentified long tube headers. 24" glasspacks right behind em and then pipe going to right in front of the back tires. It's not loud by any means at idle, but when it gets hammered, it's a beautiful sound. I wouldn't change it for the world. No, I'm not as loud as some of the other kids at school. But I'd bet a hundred bucks I could kick they're @$$3$ in a race. Especially after my uncle reset my timing and that new intake manifold got bolted on. 0-60 in 3.78 seconds. WOOOHOOO!

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

if you have a truck with a 307 that goes 0 to 60 in 3.78 seconds, then you need to go work for NASA. That is pretty much impossible. I only say pretty much becouse I'm sure with a 6-71 and lotsa N2O it could be done... but I doubt yours is.

Xhibit did just that on one of his "Pimp My Ride" shows. They had some chicks car (a minivan???) and put a speaker/audio system in it that had all sorts of automotive exhaust sounds. Seems like that had it cruising (the sounds were relative to the engine RPM's) sounding like a Ferrari, or a Lambo. Yeah, that would be cool....."Sure, Officer.....you want to hear MY engine?", as she quietly revs the stock 3.8L in the Grand Caravan. "Loud enough? That must have been someone else. Couldn't have been MY minivan sounding like that....go ahead, look under the hood. Same engine it came with."

No it ain't.....at least not around here. Got behind a late-80's GP yesterday, that had been "jacked up" enough that both rear tires were canted in at the top. Musta been a rolling meth lab car.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

PO put a SINGLE straight pipe on my ole 71, first few months I had it I thought it was pretty kewl sound...............after that I dreaded driving my own truck because of the headaches the exhaust was giving me. FInally put a stock replacement muffler (2 1/2 ID to 2 ) about 18 ionches of pipe and a 45 degree dump exiting right in front of the drivers side rear tire. MUCH quieter than the straight but still has a good rumble to it (Next is duals with Summit turbo mufflers 2.5", balance pipe and 45 degree dumps )

How ya like the Blue Birds? We got 4 Internationals 08's and the drivers like them alot, except for the defroster system..its not an improvement at all.

Re: How do I make the truck loud???

I swear guys. I had a friend with me watching the speedo, which we know is accurate because my dad was following me one day n called me to ask wut it said and it matched his perfectly at 55 so i would assume 60 would be right on as well. He said go, i hammered it. no nos. idk wut the PO did to it but i put a four barrel edel on it with the matching intake n thats it. it shoves you into the seat. n 800$ is what i payed for it. maybe i should change that b/c im not a paying member yet and i dont want to get in trouble for advertisin when im not. My uncle set the timing, in his words, 'as hot as he could w/o damaging nething'. Im assuming that means as advanced as possible without pinging. i think its got an aftermarket higher voltage coil on it if that makes a diff. idk wut to tell u but thats wut we timed it at.

Edit** After thinkin about it, the speedo 'bounces' a little bit when it starts getting past 45 or so. I bet he hit the button as soon as the needle hit 60 but he'd have had to do it when the needle 'averaged' 60. It still wouldnt have been much longer than 3.78 b/c the speedo doesnt bounce that much. Dang it. Now i still gotta go retime it. but thats not happening til the new trailing arms get here. i feel like a retard now. cya l8r. oh, anybody know how to fix the speedo bounce without spending over 5 or 10 dollars?
