Re: Pics of your 67-72 gmc truck???

Basically gmc started as a separate company brought into gm now it is basically used to widen the market

Sounds like the main reason, was so Pontiac, Buick, etc. dealerships could sell trucks along with their cars lol.

Is this still a picture thread?

Toyota has the luxury brand Lexus. VW has Audi. Nissan has infinity. I don't see GMC as being the luxury version of Chevrolet though, so I'm just curious why the brand exists.

You got it all backwards. They question should be why are there Chevrolet trucks? Chevy is a car company, like Pontiac,Buick,Oldsmobile, and Cadillac. GMC is the truck company for GM. At least it was GM's first truck. It goes back to 1909 when GM bought The Rapid Motor Vehicle Co. and began the General Motors Truck Company. In 1911 GM bought Reliance Motor Co. and after that in 1912 the brand GMC officially began...100 years ago. It was 12 years later in 1924 that GM decided to produce trucks under the Chevrolet brand. Chevy Trucks are the same vehicle as a GMC. Up til the end of the 67-72 trucks there still were other (mechanical) differences between Chevys and GMCs. For instance, through near the end of '67 GMCs were all I6 or V6. In the '50s GMCs had Pontiac V8s. The reason GM still offers both brands is so they have a line of trucks to offer at dealerships that don't sell Chevrolets. The latest model trucks have different body panels, not just grilles

Not hardly. What do you base that on? Did you forget Dodge? The ratio of GMCs vs Chevys sold these days has greatly increased on the GMC end. I feel I see as many GMCs as Chevys, maybe more? They look better anyway

Re: Pics of your 67-72 gmc truck???

I agree with special-K, on several accounts. To say "Chevy and Fords are the main trucks anymore is seems" seems to fly in the face of the number of GMCs and Dodges on the road. For that matter, there are several import brands cutting into the market share for the full size trucks.

I have to say, I'm a General Motors fan from way back! But, I like the looks of many of the GMC grills, trim, etc., over some of the designs Chevy has put out. I just don't think GMC could stand the heat of trying to terminate either of the nameplates as far as their truck lines.

Re: Pics of your 67-72 gmc truck???

Grabowski Motor Company is said to be the beginings of the GMC truck line. Around 1911 it was bought by Durant, Smith and Chevrolet and by having multi brands created the General Motors Company. I've always thought the GMC trucks were a step above the Chevys in trim and quality. In our area they usually have always been a few hundred higher sticker prices.

That makes sense, other than you see about 100X more Chevrolet trucks on the road, on the board, etc. as compared to GMC, and I'm talking trucks from 100 years or so ago through today.

Re: Pics of your 67-72 gmc truck???

Through this era and years beyond the Chevy to GMC ratio was about 5:1,but these days I'd wager it's about 50/50.
And Schrum,I don't like Dodges, either, but they sell a lot of trucks. And,your reply still overlooks GMC. They are very much in the game.

Here are some not mine C2500 for inspiration. Some may be other members':
