Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs
You're welcome. Bob clearly was one of a kind. Today, we have access to so much "OTC" or "online" merchandise that we can bolt on in a few minutes... we seem to forget that option was not available to those who pioneered our hobby. Even Chip Foose wouldn't be who and where he is without the efforts of Bob and the many, many people who came before him.
Some of the most innovative people of the Golden Era, were weekend warriors in their garages who never became household names. They didn't do fancy sketches... they just saw something, had an idea and went to work making it happen. I salute the "unknown hot-rodders" who dared to challenge convention and passed it on to future generations as an object lesson to not accept status quo in a bolt-on world, but to dream and chart your own course... even if it was "just a car." I am seriously considering contacting Bob's son to see if he's up to finishing the project for his dad. I think it would be a sweet OVERHAULIN project... but then again, I would fully respect Irwin wanting to leave it just the way it was when his dad passed on.

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs
Some cool stuff. How about that 4dr. Pretty radical for a '64 Chevy in the last picture. I'd like to see more of that first Merc

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs
This roadster was built in the '50s. It's Olds Rocket 88 engine, rear end, lights, and other parts came from a totalled nearly new '52 car. The present owner totally restored it to exactly how it was built. It is one of those cars you have to look over hard to see all that was done. Some obvious, some very subtle. Very clean, well designed high quality car

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs
It's a sports car, like an oversized MG TD. That top is all custom. The bows and hardware were all chromed. I forget what he did with the dash

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs
Yeah, it was the Rod & Custom era when lines between blended. All hot rods are custom built, from raw to refined. This one is a rod with styling a key factor. For a custom it's subtle with a factory-built look. There were typically hot rodded cars done custom-style... upholstery out the ying yang, plating, wild paint, as well as molded custom styled bodies. Look at Barris' Ala Kart

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs
I see nothing but fat fenders in that shop. That '48(?) has it all to the T.

Re: Picture Thread:Golden Era Customs
Puzzler is a cool picture. The Silver '49 Club Coupe is a favorite of mine. It's candy black cherry under the hood and dash. Very very very clean and simple mild custom.
