Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

I also forgot that I replaced the seat with another one I had that had already been recovered. Full foam, too. It didn't quite bolt up, but a little time with an angle grinder, my elitist welding setup, some good enough/functional sheet metal stick welding, and there it is.

The new 355 looks and sounds good

The new seat looks good too. I will have to say that I have never seen a blue Lincoln welder

Thanks, Cap'n.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Tuning tip. I'm certainly not claiming to have made this up, but it seems many people overlook the idea. Timing tab only goes to 16º BTDC and you want to check total timing without a dial-back light? No need to buy anything, just divide the circumference of the damper by 10 and make a mark on the damper that distance from the original mark (360º/10 obviously=36º). Mark the distance on a piece of paper or masking tape and use that to transfer it to the damper. Want 32º total? Just line the new mark up with the 4º ATDC on the tab. Quick and easy.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Short (and crappy) clip...no tuning yet. Very happy with this engine so far...should be great in the '68 Impala that will be literally 1,000lbs lighter and have a close-ratio trans...

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

First post in a while!

Bad ice on the roads this afternoon, real bad. Hit this patch and lost absolutely all steering, just drifted off with the crown of the road. Slid off and hit a tree. Wasn't even wearing my seatbelt, lol. Wasn't hurt, but it was a pretty good hit. I think the frame and driveline is fine, hopefully I'll be able to get it pulled out and drive it back when everything thaws out (with some minor roadside tinkering). Cab is at least kind of messed up, though. Sucks. Just more stuff to fix, I guess.

A cop gave me a ride to somewhere and had to make multiple attempts to get started up the slight hill. Then got sideways and almost crashed like I did three times in about two miles. Real icy!

Bad end to another bad week. Hopefully I won't have too much to fix.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Thanks, guys.

Went to survey the damage today...pretty bad. Still started right up, though. Going to get a rollback out and go from there. I at least need to get the bumper off the tire before I can drive it anywhere. Here are some pictures:

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Yep, pretty bad. Cab was already very rusty and rough, though. At least I think the big back window and that panel is OK. Radiator got into the fan and all the coolant leaked out, so I'll have to do something about that. But the running gear and frame seem fine. At least it wasn't a bunch of nice sheet metal that got ruined. Glad I put off replacing everything!

To add insult to injury, someone broke into it about three hours after I crashed (Friday evening/night). They stole a fairly nice camera I forgot about in the moment that was in the glovebox they had to pry open, and they also stole tools and anything else they thought was of value out of the toolbox. They were out drinking and stealing from wrecked cars, as they quickly took an axe or something to the toolbox that wasn't even locked. Threw an empty "Bahama Mama" can out while they were there. This was in Dallas, GA on highway 61 in between Taylor's junkyard and Bigun's biscuits. The two worthless degenerates were seen driving a dark red 1990's Ford F150 shortbed with a manual transmission (the guy in the house down the road saw them and made a note of the manual trans/shifting). They probably hit other cars in the area. If anyone has any possible leads whatsoever, please let me know. Stealing from people who already just crashed their car and may also be injured is just not ok.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Stealing is not ok in any circumstances but to do it when someone has crashed their vehicle, that is beyond pathetic. I hope they get caught and prosecuted.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Yeah, it's just one step beyond low. Hopefully the bastards get what's coming to them.

Turns out the radiator for my '68 impala was narrow enough. I took the fan off, strapped the new radiator in, and pried/beat the fender off the tire. Back on the road! The crash damage is pretty severe, but at least I can still drive it for now. I'm going to try to drag my old '65 C10 out with it tomorrow and toss that back together to drive until I fix this one.

Sorry to see this man, glad you are ok! It truly is amazing at how low people will stoop these days. Their value is nothing more than an animals.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Thanks, TJ. Yeah, it sucks. At least I can eat the animals.

Still driving it. I think I'm going to pull my '65 C10 out and start driving it soon, but it's way too muddy to do that right now. It has a 250 with well over 500k miles by my estimation (rolls in gear like it's in neutral and you can turn it by hand with the plugs in, lol) and the column-shift three-speed now. I might stick the 3.50:1 first Saginaw four-speed I have in it, along with the old 283 out of this truck with a cheap freshen-up and a more stupid cam of some sort. Would probably be fun to putt around in and get decent mileage.

As for this truck, like I said, I'm still driving it. Used it to haul my father's
'71 suburban back to the compound the other day.

Smashing it all to hell makes me really think about what I want to do with it. I'm leaning heavily towards putting a NP205 and a Dana 44 under it or something now. I've also always wanted to make it a crew cab...

I screwed a plexiglass window in that I cut out of one from a 10.5 car. It adds to the look, IMO...

Looks like a cool truck. Do you know if it still has the V6?

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Yes, its the v6. Ran up until a few years back. Had a welder gen, on back the fleet bed is in same field, probably rusted. 2 diesel dodge 1 tons for gear. Ranch truck. Funny it shows on google earth.
