1988 V30 stock low mile big block, drivability issues...fuel?
maybe someone can shed some light on this problem. My truck is just not running right and I wonder if I have a fuel pump problem. I’m throwing a service engine soon light ( off and on), sometimes a hard start ( starts stumbles and dies after a few times then it will finally start), it surges while driving, not the power it should have.
Cat is not plugged, fuel filter changed, new TPS and idle solenoid. My question, would a bad fuel pump cause these symptons? Thanks |

Check for codes and see what that service engine light is about. It should lead you in the right direction.

Being an '88 it'll be OBD-I which can be easier to just start testing with a multimeter than try to find someone with a scanner for it. Just from the OP's description I'd check for vacuum leaks before going any further.

You can jump the obd1 port to get the engine light to flash the codes

Re: 1988 V30 stock low mile big block, drivability issues...fuel?
Finally got a chance to head over to the garage, jumpered terminals a-b, got the 12, three times and then 44 three times and that was it. So I have a code 44 “lean exhaust indication”
Took the EGR off and it moves freely. |

Either too much air, or not enough fuel. Check for vacuum leaks, then check for fuel pressure.
My gut instinct tells me you have a split hose in the fuel tank. How many fuel tanks does your truck have? Does this problem only occur when using one tank? or both? |

Could be fuel pressure regulator(too low) injector issue.
Or I just googled and found someone had same issues as you it was the IAC |

Re: 1988 V30 stock low mile big block, drivability issues...fuel?
This is interesting...
https://www.justanswer.com/gmc/6lrx9...rop-start.html Think I’m going to drop the tanks. Truck ran fine off both tanks for a year or so after purchase (5 years ago) Eventuly one tank started to give me problems as mentioned above so I just ran off the other tank. After a thousand miles or so the other tank gave me problems, the truck has 19,000 original miles on it. |

Pulled the tank today, the rubber hose from the pump to the pickup tube had a hole, installed new pump and sock, done. Runs great!!
Thanks y’all and Merry Christmas! |

Since it’s now running great my idle is to high, going to replace the TBI base gasket first and see how it behaves.
On a side note, those plastic tank guards that cover the tank underneath cause a big problem with your tank rusting out, in my opinion. |
