Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

I have also been putting a lot of miles on it driving 76+ miles a day. I'm averaging 16.5MPG or so currently doing a little bit of modest hypermiling.
Here's a picture I took at Weiss Lake when I had to go to Cedar Bluff the other day.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

Yeah, it certainly gets used! And starting Friday that will become 110 miles...yikes!

I also put a set of OE West Coast Jr mirrors on it over the weekend. The frames came from the '63 dually I bought a while back.

A nut or two was nearly ready for replacement...

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

I ended up with a pile of crap that I later cleaned up and sprayed some gray Krylon onto.

The mirror heads (Truck-Lite 97646) came from here @ $11 each: http://www.truckpartswarehouseonline.../TRU97646.html

I still need to see what happens when I remove the first nut on the mirror head studs. It was already late/dark when I was putting them on, so I just spun one of the brackets around for the time being.

I think they look pretty good...

I like them better than the old ones. I had a set like your old ones for some reason they hit the wing vent don't know if you had that problem. Probably had something to do with my dear old drunk dad putting them on.

Yes, they did hit the vent windows.

BTW, no problem with removing the inner nut and bolting them directly to the brackets:

Looks like the old truck is repatina-ing itself. Love the mirrors!

Thanks. Yeah, the crappy primer job that was on it when I got it is flaking off.

I also finally added the optional rear view mirror the other day, which is certainly nice to have while driving in traffic. I made sure to have it nicely centered in the cab before I attached it and realized the dash and inside of the cab itself is apparently not centered.

I am now driving around two and a half to three hours a day (about 110 miles). Averaging 16MPG keeping the speed to 60-65MPH.

I'm hoping to get the '76 front end under there sometime early this week...

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

I painted it white the other day. Much cooler baking in the sun now!

DISCLAIMER: I don't even think it looks too bad for a $20 paint job that I started at 5:00PM and had to drive 55 miles back home when I got done. And finished by holding a flashlight in one hand and the POS paint gun in the other...

Thanks...I think.

I got a nice set of Hedman coated headers from Summit's scratch and dent table for $200 a couple days ago. Nice 14 gauge 1.75" primary tubes and 3/8" thick flanges, plus whoever returned them installed v-band flanges before he did.

Nice changeover. Yeah, white is way nicer color truck to get into after it sat all day in the sun!

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

A while back I decided to put the 307 out of my '68 Impala in this truck. It only had 98,000 miles on it, so I figured it would be a cheap and easy rebuild. For not being much more than $300 into it I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

I had the headers on another parked truck and decided to use them to make running the exhaust easier and improve the performance a little bit. I cut the z-bar arm that goes to the clutch fork off and moved it over a bit for clearance and they went right in.

I ran 2.5" pipes with Summit's house brand turbo mufflers. Pretty happy with how the routing turned out and how it sounds.

Still need to finish up a few things and tune it, but I'm happy with how it's turned out so far. Once I get it sorted out I'll have to upload a clip of it.

Re: Junkyard C30 stepside work truck "build"

This damn thing is driving me insane now. No matter what I seem to do, it still has a part throttle miss that won't go away.

Started out with the HEI out of another truck that ran, new Bosch plugs, new wires, and the nearly-new Holley 600 that I had rebuilt. Idle timing 22º for 36º total at a fairly low speed (2,500?).

Idle and WOT seemed OK, but it had a bad miss when just trying to maintain speed or go up a slight hill. Damn.

Change the module, change the coil, change the cap and rotor, check the pickup coil, change the wires, change the plugs (some of these repeated more than once), run a wire directly from the battery to the coil. Same thing.

Swap a Holley 750 off something else that ran. Same thing. This carb also has a fuel pressure gauge mounted to the inlet line that shows around 5PSI like it should, but that wouldn't matter anyway, since the float level was set when I changed the leaking needle and seat when I installed it and it does it immediately (it would run off the fuel in the bowl).

At this point I'm about to lose my mind, so I pull the HEI out and put the original points distributor setup back in. SAME THING.

Anyone have any ideas?

At least I got rid of the tiny air cleaner...
