Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Was a productive weekend for me. I pulled all the air bags back out and trimmed the airlines with an airline tubing cutter, then reinstalled the fitting with loctite pneumatic thread sealer. All my air leaks are now fixed. Held constant airpressure for 24 hours. Also installed my porterbuilt front shock relocators and shocks.

Prepped the underside of my cab so my brother could finish welding it. Also picked up some 3/16" by 2" steel that he welded in for the supports for my bucket seats. Also blasted my high hump so now that is ready to install.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

This weekend I installed my Porterbuilt front sway bar, I'm going to change the hardware to grade 8 as I think it came with grade 5 and would just feel better with grade 8.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

My brother finished welding the bottom of my cab up so I cut out and installed my high hump and painted the bottom of the cab with POR-15. Next step is to seam seal it and roll on some bedliner. That should keep everything sealed up and keep the rust away, hopefully for a while

I'll try to find out for you Chris, I threw the boxes out and actually won't be near my truck for a couple of weeks. I will email Nate to see what the part number is for the front shocks.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Well guys my project has taken a major turn in direction this past week. I needed to find a bed for my project as my fleetside that came on the truck needs alot of rust work, more than i'm willing to do. It would have also bogged down this build another couple of years trying to fix it. So I decided to make a change. My truck is now going to be a Stepper. I bought a set of rust free original 1967 takeoff stepside fenders from Frank Ham of PICKMUP parts in Washington. He is a vendor on the board and a very nice guy. I thank him for going the extra mile with packaging these so they could make it 3000 miles without getting damaged. These fenders are mint, I can't believe how nice, original and rust free these are. My fathers eyes almost popped out of his head when he saw them. He just kept saying "wow these are really nice".

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

I also went ahead and ordered a complete bed kit from Mar K with Stainless Steel hinges and hidden latches. The cool thing about Mar K is they were offering a lawaway program for up to 6 months and free freight. So it was a no brainer since I don't need the bed tomorrow. I'll get the bed payed off in the fall and be ready to install it on the frame for mock up before paint. The only thing I still need is the steps. I'll be trolling the forsale section hoping a set pop up.

I'm undecided as what to do with my current Rim/Tire setup as I know my 20x10 Coys with 295/40/20 tires will never fit without mini-tubbing the bed sides. The backspacing is 5.5" with the early narrow rear axle. So i will definitely need to tub the sides for clearance but am having a hard time wrapping my head around cutting up a brand new set of bedsides. If I had the money I would sell my Coys and go with a custom set of Billets in a 20/22 combo to fit the stepside. Somehow I doubt I will be able to do that but a man can dream right I really like the price of Raceline's as a set of 20/22 would run me around $2,300 before tires which seems like the best price I have found on a custom set of billet wheels. Intro's would run me around $3,000 for a set of 20/22 and the same with Billet Specialties. I have some time to figure out what I want to do so we will see.

You could always run a Coy's 20x8.5 out back, or a 22x9. But, if you're gonna tub anyway, why not go for the 20x14!

Yeah I don't know what i'm going to do yet. If I decide to tub the bedsides then I can keep my 20x10 Coys I already have in the rear. I would just leave some room for some wider meats in the future. My biggest concern is will my rear rims with the 5.5" backspacing and the early rear end clear the outside lip of the step side fender. As long as it clears there, I will probably just end up tubbing the bedsides so I don't have to put out anymore money for wheels at this time. We will see. This option will also always leave me plenty of room to run any Rim/Tire combo in the rear in the future.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Keith ! My brotha ..

Stepper huh ?

Honestly I was a bit concerned about your wheel setup when I read you were going with the stepper. I talked to Keith (N2Billet) a while back and his bagged 71 (Stella) is running a 265/40/22 on a 22x9 with 5" BS on an early housing. So, with that in mind .. your 20x10 with 5.5" BS will be .5" wider to the outside and inside (but your BS covers the inside extra width) I'm pretty sure Raull has 22x9 / 5" BS as well. Keith has to trim Stella just a little too. I'm not sure you want to cut into the fenders (?)

I have a 20x8.5 with 4.75"BS on my stepper. 255/45/20 on the rear, and it clears nicely. Narrow / early housing. I could lay it completely out and still have 1/4" or so on either side (lip / beside) with no problems. I have the PB stuff for my stepper, it is going lower .. I promise My thoughts were 22x9 - .25 on either side so I don't have to trim it = 20x8.5 with 4.75" BS. It was measured with a Wheelrite and it is perfect IMO.

Dude, you could sell the Coys. NP. Just put it up on stands and get the wheels you want.

I knew you would like it Chad I'm talking with Keith (N2Billet) and Raul right now about there setups. I'm probably just going to sell my current Coys and start over. I don't mind trimming a little off the lip of the fenders cause you will never see it but for some reason i'm against cutting huge holes in a new set of bedsides. Keith did tell me that the 22x9 with 5"bs will fit with a little trimming. We'll see what happens.

On a side note you said your truck is going lower, does that mean bags

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Got back on the truck this weekend. Saturday I seam sealed the bottom of the cab, let that dry overnight and then today I applied 2 coats of Duplicolor roll on bedliner. I think it came out pretty well and should hopefully prevent any future rust issues. Plus the cab floor sounds super solid now when I knock on it.
