"chevrolet" tailgate.

I was reading through my truck shop catalog last night, when I noticed that they sell the chevy stamped tailgates for $280! (plus shipping of course)

While that seems like an awesome deal, I wonder if these gates are made of a thin gauge metal and would bend if stepped on or sat on.. I want a nice gate, but I also want to be able to sit on it.. etc.. If anybody has experience with truck shop's gate, let me know. thanks!

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

I don't know about the truckshop, but Ed at mothertruckers sells a lettered tailgate from dynacorn. Dynacorn is the best available at this point, they are the company that is reproducing the camaro bodies.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

Looks like a good deal to me. I'd certainly rather pay a little more for a get that I know is good... Also looks like they have the best deal on bedsides that I've seen. Thanks for the link!

Unhappy Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

I RECEIVED MY $180 UNSTAMPED TAILGATE FROM CLASSIC PARTS OF AMERICA (WWW.CLASSICPARTS.COM) THREE WEEKS AGO. I GOT IT INTO THE PAINT BOOTH, SPRAYED IT, MOUNTED IT, IT LOOKED GREAT. WENT TO CLIMB INTO THE BACK OF IT THE NEXT WEEK (I WAS BEING REAL CAREFUL WITH NEW PAINT ON IT) AND BOWED THE INSIDE AND PUT A CREASE IN IT RIGHT IN THE HANDLE AREA! I'M LIKE 175 LBS. I'M NOT TOO HAPPY, BUT I GUESS I GOT WHAT I PAID FOR. BE CAREFUL GHETTO. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WHEN I PEELED OF THE "MADE IT TAIWAN" STICKER! I HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK!!

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

Whew man I would be steamed! But I suppose thats why I started this thread is so myself and others can stay away from the junky ones. So is ALL sheet metal from Truckshop junk? I really hate to ask such an accusatory question, but lets not kid ourselves.. it really is for the better. And Mothertruckers has pre-tty good prices I noticed- Obviously not as cheap as some, but I'd imagine the trade-off between price and quality is for the better? Also, feelings on bedsides, front fenders, etc?

Please keep the opinions and experiences coming- Yall are helping out a ton as usual!!!

Check the net prices on truckandcarshop.com...they tend to fluctuate. The "chevrolet" tailgates are now $310 and the bedsides are $470. Goodmark has bedsides for $450 and Classicparts.com has them for $440. I would reckon that Goodmark has the best quality but dont quote me.

Like someone on the boards once said in reference to tools..."I never heard anyone say I wish I would have bought the cheap one".

Let`s not jump to conclusions. All I`ve seen here is one member say what he heard. That one that bowed from a 175# guy carefully getting into his bed was from Classic Industries. At the time there are generally three major producers of repro body parts.Goodmark sells one,I believe Dynacorn.Others sell the same.Goodmark uses a high standard of acceptence on these parts and reject what doecn`t make the grade. You should ask who "makes" the part and go from there.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

I wish that vendors would list the manufacturer by the part name or in the part description. Maybe the vendors on this board could start a trend for us customers.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

true true. That last part reminds me of years ago when my dad bought his SnapOn vise for who knows how much money.. just so he could effectively use it as an anvil as well as a vice- One of his buddies told him "You're never going to need to buy another vice." And it surely has been through a lot, with him beating on it, and me growing up around it- crushing spray bombs in it I was a dumba$$ lil kid, but werent we all....

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

We have discussed tailgates a lot around here, and the concensus seems to be that many of the 'smooth' non-lettered tailgates are awful thin. I have a lettered GMC tailgate I got off of Jim Carter some time ago, and it is easily as heavy as my original one was. Has not bent yet! I think it was a Dynacorn.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

I think the thin stuff would be ok for non structural area like fender and door patch panels that wont get stepped on or carry any weight. But when it comes to areas like floors, rockers, and tailgates I would spend a little extra to get quality and not have to buy it again anyway. I always deal with Ed at Mothertruckers because he is close, I have met him in person, always great customer service, and quality parts, but that is just me.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

This subject has been beatin to death...It seems like everyone forgets that tailgates, bedsides, fenders, etc are ALL the same, now. The TGs are about 10 lbs lighter than NOS GM. No one is selling heavier, better, different...
All of the current major suppliers & dealers are getting their parts for the same factories in Taiwan.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

Well when I had my K10 painted about 10 years ago all that was available were the $100 gates with no letters. I know they were lighter when the tailgate was closed the first time and got two dips/waves/dents from where I was holding it. When the Goodmark gates first came out I replaced it with one without letters (so I could reuse my tailgate trim). It has been a good gate that I can actually stand/sit on.

Of course the ideal situation is to snap up one of these next time one shows up for sale (even if you dont need it).

Ditto from another vendor....

BTW, the Dynacorn Camaro bodies are Overseas products also, and they do require fitment of sheetmetal.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

Tri-plus is one of the big producers (I think goodmark sells them) but as been said it ALL comes from overseas. Don't assume because you spent more $$$ it is better quality, cause you could give me $300 for a $100 gate I bought (It's markup).

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

Wow this really jumped since I saw it last! I guess maybe i should have searched a little for the topic before continuing to beat it to death lol. Points are very well taken, I suppose it is definitely a long stretch to jump to a conclusion such as I did. So with all this being said then, If all gates come from the same place and are the same quality, can I feel safe buying a gate from whatever vendor has the cheapest one at the time? I suppose one could always call the vendor and ask who manufactures the part...

You are absolutely right, any parts vendor should be willing to fully disclose any information about the products they sell. If they do not know the facts you want to know they should be willing to try and find out.

Re: "chevrolet" tailgate.

I looked in LMC last night and saw they have an OE listed for $399, a bit pricey, but could be worth it.

I would call whomever you are looking at purchasing from and ask them who makes their parts, and then go from there.
