Steering Column Intermediate Joint Thingie Identification

hi guys I don't even know where to start with this thing, can someone please tell me what it is called and can it be replaced with a U joint of some kind, I don't see the shaft being D shaped so I don't know what to do

worst case scenario I just need that rubber boot or gator what ever it is called and I can repack it with some Crisco grease and send it

Re: Steering Column Intermediate Joint Thingie Identification

so I guess that thing is called a coupling, and I found this thread on something similar

Rebuild a steering shaft grease boot

however this video has me wondering if we are missing a spring

I believe it is called a pot joint. Looks like the rubber master cylinder cap may work well, but I haven't tried it. Those joints are actually a good thing, because it is a slip joint and allows movement between cab and frame without binding the steering shaft.

Thank you so much Gary, I really appreciate the explanation, do you think there should be a spring in mine like the guy had on his Chevelle, I am not positive since these can mount in both directions and his mounts upside down from mine

and I ordered this kit for the rubber boot really

Re: Steering Column Intermediate Joint Thingie Identification

I just watched the video, it's quite good. As for the spring, I don't know for sure if yours came with one or not. But, I don't think it would matter if you don't have one. The spring would just preload the joint, maybe to keep it from rattling. Would not be a function or safety issue without it. I might order one of those boot kits, glad you found that.
