Transmission Paint...?

I did a search, and came up with a lot of different ideas but - the ones I saw were for aluminum automatic transmissions. I need to know if painting my stock 4 speed manual would be ok. Also, what colors to use or stay away from. The truck is going to be red, with black "highlights". Not going to "use" the truck - it's gonna be a "play" vehicle.

Re: Transmission Paint...?

That cast blast looks good or black. The simpler the better though. Pant it a strange color and you give the guys who works on the truck when it is up on a hoist a good laugh and it gets pointed out to everyone in the shop.

Re: Transmission Paint...?

to each their own but I always snicker a little when I see a vehicle go by with a bright yellow diff, a set of red calipers, maybe different colored wheels, a high performance part decal on every corner etc. it looks to me like it is that fellows first car. personally, I like the cast iron look too but simply semi gloss black also works for me. not trying to show off the stuff that doesn't usually draw attention. I'm more of a subtle, less showy guy though. it would be more impressive for me if someone looked under my truck and commented on the rear axle as being a certain size or type than say "wow, yellow. that's not something you see every day".

it's your truck and it is called hot rodding for a reason. we do what WE like, not what everybody else likes. if you want a "bright yellow axle" then buy yellow. lol.

Re: Transmission Paint...?

Well, the rear axle/diff cover have already been cleaned up and painted gloss black... I have a few things painted red, but the truck body is going to be red, so they will match that. no "oddball" colors - although - the wife wants me to paint the motor grey, instead of red....I like the cast look on the transmission, but NEED to paint it!

Yeah....I have been scrubbing, chipping, brushing, and cleaning the heck out of it! Not DONE but getting closer! Some of that stuff was 1/2" thick - and liked where it lived! It would go faster if I could use both arms....

Re: Transmission Paint...?

I need to paint my Tremec TKO 600. It's new. I am using the Restoation Shop Firethorn Red Pearl to match the engine and truck. Should I use self etching, 2K, high temp or standard primer? Will the color matter? My paint is base and clear.

Re: Transmission Paint...?

Paint it any color you want!

I painted it like the rest of the truck: Epoxy primer, then Martin Senour single stage (although most of the truck is base/clear, which I could have done here too).

Nice! I have paint left from the engine. The painter gave it to me. maybe it is single stage. Now I will have to look. That would be nice since I have the fins to paint on other engine parts. Thank you.

Re: Transmission Paint...?

The trans above is too nice to put under a truck. I would build a glass topped coffee table and admire it in my den/mancave.

I brought a couple cans of primer and semi gloss black rustoleum to the trans shop after they rebuilt mine. They put the completed trans in their fancy washer cabinet and rattle canned it after it had dried and was still warm. So far it looks good.

Re: Transmission Paint...?

I painted mine the same color as the engine, Detroit Diesel Alpine Green. Unless you are doing a stock restoration, there really is no "wrong" color...
