help id engine

Hello all.

New project 65 stepside c10.

Removed the engine today and after uncovering engines codes a bit confused.

There is A LOT of information out there on engine codes so much so that I am getting conflicting info so I thought I would ask here to se if one of you has this figured out already
it is obviously a inline 6..
behind the distributor is

con 2 j 2 3 3850817

on the drivers side 17 0817

thanks

Re: help id engine

I'm no expert. Based on an internet search, it looks like the casting number (3850817) is for a 1962-1978 230 or 250. By the date code, the block was cast on October 2 of a year ending in 3, so 63 or 73. So its likely either a 1964 230 or a 1974 250. You need the numbers stamped into the distributor pad to know more.

Re: help id engine

thanks for the location. I was looking too far behind the distributor to those larger #'s on the block.

had to scrape the mud away but found FI003NE stamped there.

so I believe that means its a 230 from a 63-64 so not the original engine but at least I know what I am working with.
