1978 Chevy Sport Re-creation

The plan is to re-create my parent's 1978 Chevy Sport that I drove in high school. I still have the original hood ornament and wheels.

Re: 1978 Chevy Sport Re-creation

I've never seen anyone take a frame down that far. If you put that much effort into the rest of the truck it should be better than the day it rolled off the line.

Do you plan on riveting the frame back together or bolting it?

Re: 1978 Chevy Sport Re-creation

Just ordered the hardware...all grade 8 with all metal locknuts.

Once the entire frame is back together, we are going to top coat everything with powder one more time to make sure everything, including the hardware, is sealed.

The main crossbraces in and tightened...measured perfectly square, bottom and top.

The nice thing is that you wont have to get your hands dirty while you put it back together. I like the way you think.

Frame looks great so far!

Are you going with the same color scheme or something different?

Re: 1978 Chevy Sport Re-creation

Finally got some other projects out of the way so I could get back to the 20 year project

Sent the hardware thru a vibratory cleaner and metal treated. Also built a frame cart/rack that uses metal wheels so that the whole frame can go back into the powdercoat oven.

Time to start bolting pieces on!!!!

Was it hard to get the frame straight again? I was wanting to do that with my frame but was worried I'd never get it back together.

It went together great and lined up perfectly. In fact the cross members are from the original truck and the rails from a donor (the original rails had damage from an early in life collision. Everything lines up great.

I just built the rack which is square with and the frame set down on it effortlessly so it has to be <1/8 out of square corner to corner.
