454 with f*rd 9in what gears?

Hey guys,
Currently i am having a guy build a BBC for me. He knows his **** seeing as he was a NASCAR mechanic and is now building engines for a few local drag cars along with being a Por$*a race team crew chief.

He is setting me up with a 454 .040 over with 4340 crank H beams and forged 10.5-1 KBs. I have a set of new Dart 308/119cc iron heads/roller rockers and were still thinking about the flat tappet cam specs. I also have a Weiand teamG with a Quick fuel Q-series 850. With a small 200 shot of squeeze to really impress the damn SoCal rice burners.

My big debate is what gear should i throw in the F*rd 9in? have 31 spline and narrowed 2in each side so i can stuff some 12in+ in the back. was thinking about 3.89 cause i will be doing a lot of freeway driving but a 4.10/11 would be really nice to play with..

Any suggestions would help thanks guys.

Should have mentioned TH 350 for now maby 400 in the future

I'm also looking for mid-low 11s and maby high 10s with spray.

with the kinda toque that engine should make 4.10's would be alittle low. IMO.you could easily get away with 3.73's. but your tire height is also gonna take part in that.4.10's would be kool if you ran a big a$$ tire like 31 or 33's but if you run a 28 or so tall i'd say run 3.73's.just do what suits your driving. and what the truck will see more of. freeway or opened up straight line

I would agree with couch. 373's might be the ticket. I would try to run a hyd-roller or a full roller. I run a 4.30 gear with a 33 tall tire.

Re: 454 with f*rd 9in what gears?

I ran a BBC in my el camino and it had 3.73's on a 26" tire. I would go with a 28-29" on it. Try using the calculators to see what RPM, etc. you will be running.

Good luck!

Re: 454 with f*rd 9in what gears?

Thanks for the info guys. Only problem is I can not find a 10in+ rear tire in BFG T/A that is over 27in.. Maybe leave the BFG T/A on front and go with some Drag radials on the rear.

Re: 454 with f*rd 9in what gears?

MT ET drag radials. 325/50r15 is like 12in. by 28'' tall or they have a 315/60r15 which is a hair narrower and 30'' tall. i run the 325/50's they work for me fairly well. and from what i remember super73 runs the 315/60s and they worked well for him by the looks of his avatar.lol. overall you cant go wrong with that tire.

Re: 454 with f*rd 9in what gears?

So here is the plan... I do have 2 sets of rime for the rear end both 15x10 one has a 2in backspace and other has a 4in. Both will fit under the rear with mine being narrowed 4 total inches. seeing how i will be doing mostly street ill get some BFG's and have a set of Slicks on the other to throw in the bed for the track.

The question is now 3.73 or 3.89?... anyone have a final drive calculation? for now im thinking of 3.89 because i will be hitting the track as much as possible...

Having a girl that loves speed does not help only problem is the more i spend on speed the more i have to spend on her haha damn women.
