Re: Budget AC ? Factory AC Cab

Buy a good quality compressor.
Here is a link to my upgrade in the C 10. I had them do away with the drier though not need with the accumulator I already had.

The pictures of the outside & inside temps was it sitting in the garage. With a fan blowing on it. When driving it will drop to 36/38*.[/COLOR][/B]

I will follow along. I love AC threads. Andy, you are also using a newer style evaporator correct?

Re: Budget AC ? Factory AC Cab

Hey followup question. if I am getting constant hot air coming through my heat/ac system. does that mean I just need to change out the vacuum valve (checking for vac first of course) off the heater hose, or do most folks just put a manual cut off in?

The evaporator is a stock 89 truck. I never have replaced it.I probably need to though.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Budget AC ? Factory AC Cab

I have been educating myself on the AC system repair etc... and the guy who did it for me all those years ago did even less than I thought. Looking at mine, it appears I have a 134 fitting on the low side, and the high side still has the R12 fitting. I am guessing with the right adaptors he could have made this work, but considering all that time ago I gave him a conversion kit and he didnt mention not changing the high side, I doubt the system was flushed or o-rings changed etc... So I will probably change the hose with the muffler so it will have a 134connection, in addition to the compressor/dryer/expansion valve and change all the o-rings.

When I change the expansion valve what to i use to attach the sensor side to the cold line, it looks like some kind of insulation goo that was factory.

Re: Budget AC ? Factory AC Cab

Also the video I was watching says I cant flush out those mufflers anyway so probably best to replace it.

Re: Budget AC ? Factory AC Cab

It is a cork based gooey roll of stuff you can get on ebay or any AC supplier IIRC.

Re: Budget AC ? Factory AC Cab

OK guys, doing this today. I think I have everything I need (or can rent it) I have one last question.

I found instructions on re-calibrating the POA valve on a Nova site along with a video, and I found the proper setting on this site (20PSI for 134a 30 for R12). Wondering, do I flush the POA valve? there doesnt seem to be a good way to do it, I can certainly rinse it I guess but the only way I can see to flush it is to send flush through it in the same manner I send air through it to recalibrate it.

EDIT.... found answers on other sites, and this one. NO way to flush it its more of a soak, shake, drain process.

Re: Budget AC ? Factory AC Cab

Hi folks, just an update for anyone interested. So I got everything buttoned up, pulled vac. and loaded coolant. I struggled with loading the coolant because I didn't have everything I needed. My first experience with self sealing cans so I was fighting the tap the whole time, didn't realize I needed an additional/different attachment. At any rate, I have a friend who owns a shop and we dropped by there the other day, I was a 1 to 1.5 lbs light. After getting that squared away here are the results.

90 degree afternoon 65% humidity with heat index of 94, driving on the road both interstate and around town I am getting a 34 degree drop so down to about 56. At stoplights I am easing up to 58 or 59. when it was light a pound or so I was getting about 28-30 degree drop and it got warmer at interstate speeds and stop lights by 3 degrees.

Overall pretty happy with the results. I added 2 fans to the front of the condenser to help with air flow at stoplights rather than putting up the air damn and relying on the mechanical pull fan. My sons buddy asked him to turn the AC down last week, but hes a skinny little kid so there's that

Yep, mine was stuck open, otherwise I would have just adjusted it. The only place I could find to rebuild it wanted 250ish.
