Bed Wood Gas Tank Removal

Hey Guys Im Going To Attempt To Install The Bed Wood On my 69 C10 This Week.

Can It Be Done With The Box On The Truck and Do I Need To Remove My Gas Tank?

Cant Really Find Any Instructions On Doing This.

From what I have seen you put the wood in after the bed is on the truck. The fuel tank will be the issue as getting to those fasteners will be an issue. Guess you need to decide which is easier taking the bed off or dropping the fuel tank.

I know Brothers and Eastman have videos on installing wood beds in our trucks. Good Luck

I have a SWB Step Side.

I built my bed off of the truck, then placed the bed on the frame.

My tank is taller than the cross sills, so I had to modify the cross sill over the tank. I reinforced the cross sill with a piece of 1/8" bar, and you cannot access the nuts that hold the bed strips to the cross sill.

I did have to remove the bed to fix my fuel sender in the tank, so that is an issue, but I love it.

I have the same situation with my truck. I installed the wood in my bed while off the truck, much easier. In the area over the sending unit I installed the bolt, but no washer or nut. I did this on two board just in case I had a problem and had to get back in there. The bolts in front and back of this bolt seem to hold things tight. In the picture you can't tell the difference. Allows me to remove two boards with out having to remove the box, hopefully won't ever need it. Also the vents on the front sides of the tank, I installed vents from an automatic trans in them instead of plugs. Don't know if it makes any difference or not, just thought it would help it vent more.

I just did this about a month ago. I have the Boyd tank and started with the two center boards and worked out. Let me tell you that it was probably the worst part of the entire build. I finally ended up having to drop the tank to get to all the bolts due to the filler neck being in the way. It is just the one strip of bolts that go over the tank that got me. All the other ones were relatively easy to get to under the truck. If you have the ability to lift it off then I would do as the others have and put the wood in while it is off the truck.
