Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?

Just to point out that GM can be inconsistent, on the '64 Chevy cab I recently asked this question about I found it on the LH rear door pillar, not above the door.

I am going to check out some 64's at the wrecking yard, I changed the gmc pic to note that 64 gmc is on the rear driver door pillar, and I think that chevy will turn out the same way for 64. I will update as soon as I get a pic.

I looked at a 64 Chevy I'm swaping some stuff for, yesterday. It was on the B pillar. I thought it was missing at first.

Here are two of my '64 Chevy C10 cabs and both have the VIN on the underside of the driver side door jamb, roughly in the center of the door opening.

on post # 4 of this thread there is a link to a vin decoder...
yours codes out to a 63 pickup 3/4 ton stlouis,mo. the sequintial # is 118673

I saw that and did that, but I was trying to code it out with your post 5, and it wasn't making since to me.... Since this truck is dually one done I'm trying to find the VIN on the chassy to see what year it is also... Thanks for your help, I'll keep searching on the frame

ok.. the post # 5 is for canadian trucks only.
if your frame is a 60-66 there should be the vin by the left front A arm, and under the cab on the lh side...
if the frame is a later one, there still should be a vin under the cab on the drivers side... that was pretty much a standard for gm frames, and I have seen quite a few different frames with a vin there.

Is there any sign of the body being off the frame?
maybe this frame was on a different vehicle... the cab vin, and the frame vin should match....

this might be a stupid guess i bet that frame is one of a bread or milk truck ...i have done that with a 65 that was killed in the rear ...bread truck 100.00 wrecked 65 c-10 250.00 ...i moved and still do lots of hay with it ...i will check mine to see if it could maybe be an unknown too...

Assuming that the frame is not original to the truck, is there a way to determine,using the code given, to discover what the frame is from?

Hello, I have been told several times that I have a rare truck. It's a 1961 longbed stepside 1 ton c30 with 4 on the floor.. This decoder doesn't specify 1 ton nor the 61 longbed stepside. Is there a reason for that?
Also, I've been looking and can't find another owner so im curious to know if i have the only one. Im not sure if thats a good thing or not but it tikles my curiosity. I was checking out the 1961 Chevy truck series poster i didn't see it there either. I'll post a few pics for you to see it for yourself. The one circles is the short stepside.

Ya that was the same thing I saw when I typed it in. I am sure that this cab did not come with this frame. I'm going replace the cab with one that is less rusted. But it would be nice to know what frame this is.

So I found the VIN on the frame and this is what I came up with....

ok, I think that other # you found on your frame, was a part#, and a poduction date- 9-28-62, which would be right in the thick of 63's production.

you new # that you found, matvhes your vin, on the cab (I think the 3 is an 8), every thing else matches up.
all the frame had for a code, was :

the last digit of the production year
the letter of the assembly plant
the sequential #

check out the pics in post #3, with the frame vin, and the 65 body tag.

sand around in front of that s, and you should find a 3, I am 99% sure that yoour frame is the original for that cab.

So what about the 3 digit code on the door pilars between the door hinges?
I got a 001 on the left and a R72 on the right. Never noticed them untill I sanded over them today.

.... probably just a part #, you wouldn't believe all the stampings that you would find if you had your cab acid dipped....
pretty much every piece has a # stamped on it somewhere.
