71-72 Throttle cable

Anyone bought a 71-72 4x4 throttle cable worth a crap lately? I replaced my original in early 2021 with a part from Classic Parts of America. At the time Wes and GMC Paul’s didn’t have them that I recall (could be wrong). Yesterday with less than 1,000 miles on the cable it decided to begin hanging the throttle part to wide open, and eventually break about 25 miles from home. The 10 miles or so it was acting up before it broke were a real blast, filled with full throttle runs, cutting the ignition at speed, 4-5 stops to modify the return spring so it would pull it all the way closed, ultimately leading to the cable snapping. Good thing it’s got a 4 speed so I still had full hydroboost brakes while it was running with the Ignition off.

So… Anyone bought a decent part lately that will last more than 1,000 miles?

Re: 71-72 Throttle cable

I've seen this on vehicle with poor starter grounds. While cranking the engine starter current is flowing through the throttle cable causing to degrade.

Re: 71-72 Throttle cable

Good points, it’s got 2-3 years since new 1-0 welding cable from the starter to the battery and the same for battery ground, the 2 engine to frame grounds I added are new within the last 2-3 years as well, and made from 8 or 10 gauge if I remember correctly.
The cable looks like it started to fray and began wearing in the sheath. I think I’m going to buy another cable and try to lube inside the sheath with silicone lube or something like that and see how it goes.

Re: 71-72 Throttle cable

Graphite would be better but not sure how you would get it inside the cable ?

Try PB Blaster Dry Lube. It sprays liquid and will run down inside the cable. It then drys into a really slick white microfine powder..... Works good on locks too.

Just a suggestion, Bob's speedometer can make you a new one. They have a website. Might be better quality than a reproduction.
