I hear you Mark, these old rust buckets will drive you to drinking. It looks to me like you have it going your way on the driver side. Keep it up! I didn't touch my cab today or rust just golf clubs

It was a good day for golf.. or just about anything outside.. I was tempted to take the cover off the boat and go for a little boat ride.. I still might tomorrow...

Nice work Crash, loking good, body work does suck though doesn't it, so slow just a picking away and picking away, sure cool to get a part over and see the difference on the old rusty parts to new.

Subscribed!!! You are doing an awesome job. I recently bought a 71 K10, and Im going the LQ4 route myself. Ill be in the market for a 6.0. Ive had it with SBC and carbs. Plus Im going to wheel it, so the fuel injection is the only way to go. Great job on the bodywork. I was lucky enough to find a decent cab and a restored frame.

I guess I need to go back thru your thread and write down all the steps for the proper progression....unless some great guy on here...hint hint...has already made a decent list of all the steps in their somewhat proper order for a frame up rebuild.

Keep it up!

Hey Mark The truck will be waiting for your attention when you get back, a little R&R is always good. body work looks great, will look better with paint... have you picked color scheme.

I have been following your build and am in the process of doing the exact same thing. The only difference is I am using a 67' cab with a small back window, but have a 1972 frame cut down from long to short and am replacing the same sheet metal. I started with the sheet metal first because I hate it so much. I wanted to leave the fun stuff until last so I didn't get burned out or bitter about the project. You are doing great and the LMC panels are hit and miss with fitment. I put up a fight with the driver side inner rocker for hours last night and am still not happy with it yet. Keep up the inspiration man!

I wish I could find the bottom 3 inches of toeboard like you cut out of your other cab. I have the same rot there, but dont have a good spare cab to steal from. I wish they sold they section as a patch instead of the entire firewall. I dont need 300 bucks worth of sheet metal!

I got a few hours of work in today before I left the lake for home..

Welded in the front cab support



Used some aluminum paint to see my scribe marks.


Ready for Por15 and weldable primer




Then I fitted and welded the floor pan in.







I thought I would show how much dust is in the air when you are sanding and grinding.. new on the left and old on the right.



I need to replace the u-joints in both drive shafts.. However it looks to me like the yokes are not indexed correctly… Is this normal for these trucks.. I don’t think it is, but I want to get some other opinions.






Any thoughts on this..

Thanks K5xjfiles.. I am with you on the fuel injection.. I started the engine up for a visitor today.. it had not been started in a couple of weeks... it started right up and idled great.. I have not made a list of steps.. What in particular are you refering to for steps? The whole build or something else..

Thanks BeefyJoeDirt.. I feel your pain with getting some of this to fit.. But I have to admit that I am feeling better about the way things are working out.

I agree with you on the patch panel I wish they had more to choose from.. I really hated to cut up the other cab like I did.. I could have repaired it about as easy as the one I working on.. But I am sure it will be used to fix other cabs... I think McBassin may use the drip rails for a cab he has..

I have worked on many many cars and trucks, all years and have never seen ujoints not indexed the same, just slid the slip yoke end off and back on so it lines up with the other end then it will balance better.

I just noticed in some of your new pictures that you posted....The cab you are repairing doesn't have a high transmission tunnel hump. Does the original cab? Hopefully youll get lucky and keep the low profile hump and not have clearnace issues. Less work that way...

Nice work on the drivers side rust repair Mark. It looks to me you are a pro at this stuff already. It also looks like your floor pan fit pretty good. Not sure about the u-joint indexing? it makes sense to me that that should be indexed a certain way.

Thanks mud.man… I agree, but I wanted to make sure. The truck drove really smooth with the drive shafts like this. I will go ahead and change them to the way I believe they should be. If they need to be changed back I will.

Thanks… I have adjusted to the poor fitting panels.. now I look at what is the best way to make it fit.

BeefyJoe.. I have a high hump from the old cab.. I did some measuring, I will need it….

Pro.. is not the word I would use… The floor pan fits because I forced it to fit.. I showed it who the boss is...

Back to the rust.. Started the day with cutting and welding the new front pillar support. Be careful when cutting the old pillar. You can get into the plate that holds the nuts for the lower door hinge. I did but was able to fix the problem.



After that I started on the toe board.





I cut the replacement from the old cab.



Next up is the rust near the seat belt area. I will be cutting a replacement out of the old cab.





Spot welded the floor pan to the toe board. Thanks for lending me the spot welder Mike...



Starting to look better..







I still have a lot of weld to grind down and cleanup..I still need to fit the Driver Side Cab corner and both rockers. Hopefully I get the rust on the cab all repaired by the end of this month.
