Just picked up this 1990 Chevy

I started looking for one of these trucks a couple months ago and found this one. I ended up getting it for $1200 with a rod knocking.

Re: Just picked up this 1990 Chevy

Right now my plan is to pull the motor and replace it with a crate motor and have the transmission rebuilt.

Re: Just picked up this 1990 Chevy

Seems to me you created extra work for yourself by removing the radiator support. There's plenty of room to work otherwise. I swapped my engine out five years ago. I had the truck up on jackstands and Rhino ramps and I did the work myself. It looks like you have a solid truck to start your project. Good luck!

Good looking motor. Honestly it took me an extra hour to remove the core support but the amount of room it opened up would have been worth 3 hours.

That engine looks like it has Vortec heads. The pic of your engine looks like TBI. I see a problem, but I hope not. Take a good look at your intake manifold unless you have another plan we're not in on.

My truck is a 1990. Factory TBI. I am leaving the engine stock for the gas mileage because I am going to make it a daily driver. Not vortec though. That’s 95.

I_think_you_missed_my_point. The engine you have pictured has Vortec heads which are incompatible with your TBI manifold. Am I wrong or is there another plan?

Oh okay. They are just center bolt valve cover. Not vortec heads.

Here is the engine in the image:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/vre-350g8795

Claims to be a direct replacement for many 87-95 vehicles. They switched to Vortec in 96, right? I assumed that is why this engine is listed as 87-95?

Look closely at those heads in the lifter valley. Those are Vortec heads and won't work with your TBI manifold. You better follow that up to make sure because when it's sitting beside your truck and you're trying to install the manifold it's, "Oh sh!t time". The two engine heads have totally different bolt arrangements.

Re: Just picked up this 1990 Chevy

For sure get Summit on the horn.
Secondly you could try this

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-12496821

Also check out http://www.tbichips.comfor tips.

Vortec will make for a great engine.

Re: Just picked up this 1990 Chevy

i would call and confirm, i went with vortec as i knew i was swapping injection units...but my heads also have casting shapes on the ends of each heads...the pic is smooth, wich i thought were non vortec center bolts.

Re: Just picked up this 1990 Chevy

You can use the 12496821 GMPP Vortec TBI intake but that's almost five Benjamins.

Re: Just picked up this 1990 Chevy

Why all this talk about Vortec heads vs TBI intake, etc? Why be so focused on a picture that could be generic when all the text from Summit states it is for TBI or carb and lists application for the years leading 'up to' 1996 when the Vortecs became standard? Do some people only look at pictures? Looks like he picked the right motor to me.
