Idle stop solenoid, do I need it?

Hey guys,

Been wrenching on my truck today trying to set the timing and idle stop solenoid started sparking so I took it apart to check out what’s going on and it literally fell apart in my hands. Is this something I need? I can’t seem to find an exact replacement. It’s off a 1972 c20 with 292 inline six 1barrel Rochester carb, no A/C on the truck.

It keeps the idle speed up when running. It's usually for when the AC is on. It's also known as an anti-dieseling solenoid. If you have a stick shift, if it diesels when you shut it off, keep a foot on the brake and let the clutch out. That works OK if you are the only one to drive it, but if someone else drives it and it diesels, they may run into trouble. If it was mine, I'd replace it, because nobody else in the family expects to have to employ tricks with our vehicles.

Ok perfect that works for me, I’ll just use a bolt to set the idle then deal with the quirks. Thanks again!
