Cheap carrier bearing or...?

less than 100 miles probably and bearing looks like it came apart. it was put on by the driveshaft company when I had it rebuilt. could it be just a cheap product or is something more going on? was thinking of updating to a billet one if I need to.

truck is a 67 suburban with air ride with 2 piece driveshaft

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

Either the Driveshaft is out of balance or defective bearing.

I had a shop in town that fixed the one in my 63 Impala.
It did not last a day.

I took it to a Real good shop in Nashville Problem solved.

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

how did they fix it? just replace the bearing? or did they re balance it and put a new bearing?

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

The driveshaft was straightened in a lathe.
Then balanced on their balancing machine.
Then they installed the new bearing.

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

The stock bearing with an extreme drop won't last long. If you do not have a Slip Shaft Driveline and a heavy duty billet carrier bearing then you should get them both.

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

I do have a slip shaft, that's why I was thinking going to a billet one. they do look more sturdy for sure, but I wasn't sure if maybe I had some under lying problem. I think I'll try up a billet one and see what happens. I highly doubt it is unbalanced, but ya never know. definitely have seen weirder stuff lol

wouldn't happen to know the size it uses?

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

Go to Amazon or Ebay and type in Heavy Duty Aluminum Poly Driveshaft Carier Bearing for 1958-1964 Chevy Impala, it's the same for the trucks.

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

what does the angle of the shaft look at normal ride height? picture doesn't show it clearly. If the angles are way out of spec, the bearing can only do so much. Is the bearing directional, like angled one way or the other? was the bearing hard to install/align?
I would say the bearing was not the fault but more likely drive line angles caused the failure..

post some good pictures of the angles of the shaft and going through the center support area

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

The alum/poly bearing is def the one to run on these trucks vs. the light duty unit they sold you.

As mentioned/requested, share some images of things @ the ride height you were driving those miles at. That might provide some insight as well.

Re: Cheap carrier bearing or...?

i took it out and went back to the driveshaft shop after putting in the new bulky billet carrier bearing and he said everything looked normal as far as where the shaft sits inside the tube at ride height. thinking maybe its just the rinky dinky carrier bearing that was on it couldnt handle the up and down. i posted some pics on my build thread but heres what they look like. first pic is fully collapsed inside the tube, second pic is fully extended, and the third pic is at ride height. that pic you can see the beefy new carrier bearing.
