Re: 1986 Turbo K5

What did you do for a MPH signal? Was surprised to see you use a 208 since they never came with a VSS sensor. I've got a 241 but it's cable, I'd probably go to a VSS tail cone.

Re: 1986 Turbo K5

I have Dakota Digital VHX gauges on my truck. If you take a look at the pics below, on the NP208 I circled where the original speedocable went. Well Dakota makes a sensor, part # "SEN-01-128 128k GM-style High Frequency Pulse Generator", that will screw right on. Once you plug this on, you just program the gauges. For the ECU, 4x4 4L80Es have a ISS and a VSS. They are both before the adapter for the transfer case. See the random pic I found on-line. I converted my 4l60E to accept the 4L80E jumper harness. It really was pretty easy. Hope this helps, sorry for it being dirty, this was for mockup.

Re: 1986 Turbo K5

Sweet build dude! I'm gathering parts to put a junkyard h/c/i 5.3 and 4l80e in to my 89 K5. How did you wind up mounting the 4l80e in yours? Most pickup guys just slide the stock trans crossmember back a little and redrill the holes but I haven't found any K5 guys that have used the bigger trans...

On a side note your trans sounds like it was modified at some point. Only the 2wd 4l80e's had both speed sensors in the case and the 4wd versions still had the output sensor in the transfer case (so the computer knows if you are in 4 low) and a plug where the OSS would have been in the case. GM still left the second tone ring in a lot of them so some guys are able to just remove the plug and screw in the sensor or have it added when doing a rebuild. I wasn't that lucky with my trans (from a 00 Silverado ) and didn't want to do a rebuild yet so I picked up a 32 spline np241c with VSS from a 90 Suburban.

Thanks! I just slid my crossmember back as well. I built some reinforcement plates to go on the inside of the frame.

As far as my transmission goes. It was rebuilt by Jakes transmissions and I'm guessing I got lucky. I pulled the plug out and the Oss tone ring was already there. Just plugged in the harness with the new sensor.

Thanks! It catches a few people off guard. I'd like to build something a little lower to the ground next, maybe a first or second gen c10.
