Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Hi, all. Super informative thread. I believe i have what is the model number on the firewall of my 1967 K/10. It reads KE10704 and should breakdown as a 4x4, V8, 1/2 ton, swb, stepside. The numbers are hard to read but there nonetheless. The spid is hardly legible, only able to make out portions of the vin, so i wanted to be sure i was reading it as others would. Thanks!

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Digging up this thread because I think all the marks previously identified on this and other threads have been pretty well explained or decoded by Keith and others...except for these driver's side cowl numbers. They have an obvious pattern--but I can't suss out their meaning. Hoping fresh eyes might have an idea.

I think we need someone more familiar with 67-72 than me for those. It's not any kind of code that I recognize.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Here are stamped sequence numbers on our Fremont donor cab. One is just above the firewall and the other is on the back of the cab just above the bottom. Both are on the truck midline (nothing on the driver's side cowl corner as shown in previous examples in this thread.

...(another shout out to smbrous70, yours was a St.Louis 44, this is a Fremont 44)

I assume mine was the 440th build. It's all over the truck . Hood ,behind the seat on the bed cowl and rad support. All seem to be done by different people.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Thanks for the replies somehow I have missed all these responses to the GMC it is really cool to see other trucks with the same initials and markings. Neat to think the same guy wrote on all these trucks only if we knew who the employee was.

I can confirm that yes that is a St Louis truck - I saw that and thought of you should have uploaded it here.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

FWIW my St Louis 72 Blazer had a naked firewall - I wonder if built on a different line? I’ll have to keep eye out for other St Louis 72 Blazer fire walls.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Thanks for pulling those pics off CL and posting the Blazer firewall Pete. That CL truck was gone quickly (as it should have been).

As you might imagine I've thought about the marks/no marks a bit. Obviously the plants operated differently, and different operators and shifts were likely variable. That one guy in St. Louis was pretty prolific, in other words...it seems like St. Louis' process involved more marks than other plants and this guy was the dominant guy in his area.

...but I also think there can be a dealer prep component. These marks are easy to wipe off...especially when they're fresh (as me how I know). A dealer may have them removed on delivery. Similarly a meticulous new truck owner may be off put by manufacturer graffiti and take it off once he gets it home. I think it's cool that any of it survived.

I always get a kick out of thinking about the hands that make things...and handwriting is pretty personal. These guys/gals literally left their mark.

For fun I poked around my 2019 MY Chevy - not much in the way of factory markings but here’s what I found on a cursory check.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

Here are the mark on a 71 Chevy K10 Cheyenne. The VIN plate, frame serial number and the SPID all match. The first owner bought it new and then traded it in the second owner bought it for his farm and had it from 72 to 2017 then the guy I got it from only had it a couple of months. I don't think VIN or anything has been swapped but he grease pencil marks for the KE don't match anything.

Classic St. Louis truck....could've ID'd it without the SPID. The K and the M really give that guy/girl away. Thanks for sharing. Nice pickup.

I would think it's legit. If you told me "mustard", I'd know which yellow you meant. Ochre is less letters, but if you got a new paint guy...you taking any chances?

Also yes, wish we could consolidate threads on this topic. We've got a handful. Alas, I've got a feeling that at any given time, only a few humans on this earth are interested in this very specific topic...and every one of them is the type of person that will find every one of these threads.

I had a C10 that had Hugger Orange written under the cowl paint. I'm pretty sure it was a St Louis build.

1971 Cheyenne K20. I always thought it was neat on this truck that they wrote U16 on the firewall to note the tachometer.

Blasphemy- we had the detail guys clean all that stuff off, when I worked at dealerships. The Service manager at one was a real female of the canine persuasion about removing the window stickers. We figured out a way of getting them off without damaging them- blot with a wet shop rag until the glue was soft, and remove them in one piece.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

My 71 GMC doesn't show to have any and I know that they were never wiped off.

The whole firewall mark thing reminds me of being at a regional Mustang meet a few years ago when someone had brought an old fart who had been an inspector on the Mustang line in 65/66 to verify his chalk marks on firewalls. Big celebrity in Mustang restorer land.

Dustin...welcome to the board and thanks for posting. We've got a few factory markings threads (I wish we could consolidate them). They're all pretty much in the 67-72 forums except for this one:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=720477 (if someone is aware of another thread, please correct me).

But I think we've got some 60-66 trucks posted in the 67-72 threads. Regardless, you could start a dedicated 60-66 factory markings thread in the 60-66 discussion area or I think it's fine to post here.

Here's a thread on how to post pics:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=627506

I think it's helpful to state the plant that built your truck when you post pics, since the markings varied from plant to plant.

Happy Posting!

Thank you very much for all your help my friend.
I will read up on everything and then try to post pictures.
I've been reading much on the "Tire Pen Marking Codes" so far about
15+ different one's and still reading. I've seen several members having 1960-63 C10's on here and very happy to read and learn more each time I open up a new post.
Both my 63 C10's were born in St.Los, Missouri and bought from past Missouri Owner's and now live with me in Paw Paw, Michigan.
I will give more information when I'm able to post pictures.
Thank you again, I will be back in touch my friend.

Re: factory grease pencil marks?

OMG. First I love St. Louis marks best. Also, same person wrote on my Blazer. Exact same handwriting.

...but the best part is the Z84T. I knew that 4T was a Z84, but it never occurred to me that it was an abbreviation for Z84. But absolutely makes sense because of the other RPO codes for engine, tranny and brakes.

Thanks for posting!!!!

Edit: Because it totally checks out on "2T" models being an abbreviation for Z62. Wonderful.
