Get Home Emergency Tools

I've owned my 71 K5 for a little over a year. I'm still a newbie and trying to learn as much as possible about my truck. This weekend I learned that I should have had an Emergency Get Home Tool kit while I was stalled on the side of the road.

What would you put inside an Emergency Get Home Tool box? I have .50 cal ammo box, which measures 11L x 5.5W x 7H that I will be carrying in my truck from now on. This is what I'll be packing so far. Any suggestions? Constructive criticism? Dos and dont's?

1) Standard wrench set (5/16-1in)
2) Vise Grips (small and large)
3) Screw drivers (Phillips and Flat Head)
4) Duct tape
5) Electrical tape
6) Loctite
7) Fuses

What else would you have? Socket wrench/sockets?

I hear that. She's been reliable so far, but I ran out of luck this weekend. I'm embarassed to say what it was, but I'll man up. It was totally my own fault. I purchased a new battery for it. My truck uses side posts. The PO used actual bolts and not actual battery side post bolts. The bolts the PO used were to long for the battery. I overtightened them and pierced the battey. Drove around all day with acid spilling everywhere until the battery took a dump. I walked to Autozone, replaced battery, bought correct posts and had to purchase a few tools to get the job done. Hence the Get Home Tool Chest idea.

Re: Get Home Emergency Tools

Was going to mount a .50 cal box under the hood, but instead opted to use a water-proof military bag that you can pick up from any surplus store.

Have socket set, crescent, multiple pliers, some spare wire (in case I need to get my McGuyver groove on!), knife, duct tape, hand warmers, rubber gloves, work gloves, rope and tow strap with hooks. Also have a spare ignition module and coil.

The only time I ever broke down, was when the ignition coil went out. On the highway, 15 miles from no where, about 140 miles from home.

When I go on longer trips (up to 400 miles), I usually carry a blanket, water and some snacks for emergency only.

Re: Get Home Emergency Tools

I would add a basic set of wire strippers and some wire nuts. That's a quick way to fix an electrical issue on the roadside until you can do it right at home.

Didn't think about that. I'll add it to the list. Thanks.

Re: Get Home Emergency Tools

I've learned on here (from others) about about fire so I suggest having a fire extinguisher. Being that I spent 24 years in the military, I believe its a staple for the vehicle.
This is a good reminder for me, as the wife and daughters gall ot new cars and I haven't replaced the ones in their cars.
P.S. Make sure you neutralize and rinse off the battery acid.

Re: Get Home Emergency Tools

No need for Loc-tite in an emergency kit.

Huck some zip-ties, some kind of knife, baling wire and cutters, oh... and I took an old ball peen hammer and cut the handle short so it would fit in an ammo box as well. Never know when you'll need a hammer.

Oh... box of band-aids too!

Stopping by at Harbor Freight today for some tools that I won't mind if they get stolen from the truck.

Spend just a little more and get some Craftsman. Busted knuckles are worse than no or stolen tools!

Re: Get Home Emergency Tools

You guys should see what I carry just in my car!

First aid kit
Road flares
Reflective triangle (grabbed the trucker type set the other day when the wrecker pulled one off and forgot to pick those up)
Tow strap
2 quarts of oil
Water (for radiator)
2 screw jacks
Spare
Funnel
Black tape
Crow bar
Extra 1/2" ratchet (for lug nuts)
Cheater bar
Axe
Jumper cables
Rugs and towels
Rope
CO2 extinguisher
ABC extinguisher

I never travel (not even off my property) without 1 or 2 handguns and spare ammo, pepper spray, tactical flashlight, knife.....and yes I've had to use all of those at one point or another.

I have been wondering how I am going to carry all of that in my truck. Time to move the gas tank? LOL

If I were you, I'd at least put a 3/8 inch socket set into your ammo box.
