International fridge to toolbox - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I never even knew IH made refridgerators until I spotted this one a few months ago. It's a 1951 & still ran cold. The guy that had it was trying to clean out some stuff from a room. So when I commented about how cool it was he said, "If you'll get it out of here, it's yours for FREE." I was like a little kid a Christmas!
Got it home & to the purist did the unthinkable...cut the coolant lines.
I've been needing a place to organize & put all my electrical stuff, so thought
why not use this and turn it into a toolbox!
Some time disassembling, sanding, and repainting. Added casters on the bottom so could roll it around the shop easily. Then with a few plastic organizing boxes from Walmart for my bulbs, switches, relays & such; expanded metal & peg hooks for hanging tools & other items... taaaa daaa the coolest toolbox around!

That is one hell of an idea!!!!! I really dig it. too cool. I got a few of them old fridges areound and that is making me think now. I would never have thought of doing that.

not that i would ever be considered a purist but i think you wasted a perfectly good fridge....that would have been a great thing to do with one that didn't get cold anymore. I woulda found a non working one and customized it as u did then turned the IH one into a custom painted beer fridge, but thats just my opinion...

Love the paint, it looks more old school and classier than the original all white, and much nicer.

Would have rebuilt it into a fridge, but I can appreciate your efforts on it too.

Now I need to find a worn out fridge.

I have a 1953 IH fridge. From what I understand it uses amonia as the refridgerant. My IH is about the coldest fridge I've seen without being a freezer. You should have just unplugged it. I like your paint job!
